This is a big reason I am ok with these types of releases. I am really big into horror and exploitation movies. Shout Factory/Scream Factory does this. They often release movies that have decent blu ray releases from major studios. Sometimes they do a new scan (which might not improve things that much) and add some new interviews. I might skip on these releases, but many collectors/fans buy them. If these popular films make money for them and fund some of their pet projects like The Brain (1988) and La Residencia (1970), I am more than ok with it. The same goes for the Criterion collection. If they release The Breakfast club and it means that we get Come and See (1985) and some other gems from golden era Hollywood/pre-code Hollywood/Independents/Foreign Films then all the better. Some of the gems we love on this forum probably wouldn't keep the lights on at the Criterion office.

Maybe I just got lucky. I've never had a problem playing it. I didn't even know there was a problem with this particular title. And I've played it on 2 or 3 different HD DVD players.

Criterion Tweeted images of Terence Stamp in The Hit.

Hopefully, an upgrade announcement will soon be forthcoming.

I just watched Cleo from 5 to 7 a few nights ago on Kanopy and I found it very enjoyable. It was my first exposure to Agnes Varda and it kept me entranced the entire time in spite of the leisurely pace. Corinne Marchand is radiant as Cleo, a high-strung singer who traverses the city in real time while awaiting the results of a biopsy. There were some third act aspects that do not hold up as well when viewed through the eyes of modern culture, but that did not ruin the experience for me.

This is a title that I would love to see upgraded to Blu-Ray. The Kanopy feed did not look great and the subtitle placement was abhorrent. Have there been any rumblings of Criterion upgrading this title of the entire Agnes Varda 4 film set?

I would love a stand alone release since the movie is in that one boxset and I just want to upgrade my LaserDisc though being on the format does seem add to the movie's feel at least to me.

Or would we have been better served with releases of titles that have not yet made it to any format?

With that said, I still plan on getting Criterion's Rebecca release, as this is one of my favorite movies. But I haven't felt the need to do so yet.
Those releases were OOP. Except for the super diehards who was going to pay the scalper level prices for the MGM BluRay of Notorious. For classic cinema fans to not have these titles at affordable prices would've been a crime.

A few weeks back I saw 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and In the Heat of the Night at Target in broken cases on Clearance for $11.96

I meant to check the store again the next two times I visited to see if they lowered the prices, but I completely forgot.

Probably in the minority here, but does anyone else like the mini poster/leaflets Criterion does? I mean, I don't mind booklets, but I only ever read them once and that's it. So far the only titles that I'm aware of that come with mini posters are:

Carnival of Souls
Cat People
Lady Snowblood
Fantastic Planet
The Brood
Night of the Living Dead

Anyone else know what others come with 'em?

I can’t say off the top of my head, but I know I have a few with the “dorm room poster” inserts. I am not a fan. I prefer inserts with one fold at most.

I am not 100% confident and not near my collection right now, but I believe that Don't Look Now, Touch of Zen, and Dragon Inn have them.

Latest from Vemeo who appears to be handling Criterion Channel:

The reason you’re having trouble right now is because Criterion is using DRM (Digital Rights Management) and HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) in order to comply with the technical requirements, anti-piracy provisions, and territorial restrictions of their agreements with major studios and independent rights holders around the world. These technologies help prevent unauthorized playback and copying, but unfortunately they aren’t compatible with all viewing setups. It sounds like your current setup is running into an incompatibility issue.

When the Channel officially launches on April 8th, apps for Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, and Amazon Fire should provide you with more options to watch on a television set or home theater. Until then, the pre-launch Movie of the Week is only supported in a web browser on a computer, tablet or phone. I’m very sorry that this is limiting your options for viewing right now.

I'm not a fan of the posters in the two King Hu films, but that's okay since both Dragon Inn and A Touch of Zen are masterpieces.

Times three hundred.

The Shape of Water was released a year ago by the now defunct Twentieth Century Fox. Our reviewer Jeffrey Kauffman scored the video as reference quality, the audio near reference quality, and the disc contains at least an average number of extras.

What would be the justification for getting a Criterion release? Maybe getting one extra documentary? Is that worth not getting a blu-ray for The Thin Man, Red Beard, The Pianist, The Lady Eve, or any number of other classics that still have no high definition release?

No, it's not.

Disney now has the rights to this film, and we all know how much they love a buck. I wouldn't be surprised to see a super duper collector's issue with all sorts of bells and whistles. In the mean time, Criterion, with their comparatively limited resources, just doesn't need to be issuing The Shape of Water. Not when a year old, fantastic release already exists.
No offense taken. All good. I would just like to have my 3 favorite GDT movies all on CC. But if Shape of Water doesn't happen, I'm ok with that too.

Kino has the rights to 'Touchez pas au grisbi', which means that Criterion has the rights to 'Le Trou'.
