On another note Criterion should try to get ahold of more classic Chinese Cinema. 'Raise the Red Latern' and 'Farewell My Concubine' both deserve to be in the collection. I mean it'd just be great to have an English Blu Ray for the former.
It's probably a good thing Criterion didn't release Floating Weeds before. The Eureka BD is quite lacking, and the film got a newer 4K restoration recently. A lot of the UK BD's of Ozu films, which are mostly from BFI, are actually sourced from Criterion. I don't think Criterion just wants to rely on DVD-era masters though if they can help it, so I think in many instances they're waiting for newer scans/restorations to be done.

Not really a classic, but...The Horse Thief please!

I'd shell out some pretty serious dough for Yellow Earth, Red Sorghum, The Horse Thief, Shanghai Triad, To Live etc.

I assume that the delay on more Ozu is that Criterion is waiting until they can get access to the restorations that Shochiku have done (or are doing, I'm not sure if they've completed them all.)

It's truly a wonderful time to be a film collector. I've decided on my region free player, the Sony BDP-1700 (same one StarDestroyer52 has). It will integrate nicely with my other Sony equipment. I'll pick it up at the end of April.

Between my Criterions, and what I've been bringing in from the UK, especially the Eureka discs, I can get pretty much anything I want now.

Criterion needs to add a few of these to their catalog.

Now you're living your life. I don't see Faust in there tho.

I need that City Girl and The Lost Weekend.

Congrats. I've only had mine since the beginning of the February and I have been buying up Eureka, Studiocanal, and Arrow titles left and right. BTW, I just ordered The Lost Weekend myself and am just waiting on it along with two others from Eureka(Youth of the Beast, Sink the Bismarck). I already had City Girl since it was Region Free despite it saying B which other users may find informative.

Going region-free was the best (and most expensive) thing I ever did collecting-wise.

Being a Brit expat, it also allows me to own some of the wonderful television shows I grew up with that realistically will never get a Region A release.

You're going to love it!

Is Scanners as weird as Videodrome? I thought Videodrome was okay its not my favorite in the collection but on certain times it is enjoyable.

Going region free is great especially for films that are MIA stateside.

Or Amazon.

Check for listings from sellers 220-electronics and Bombay Electronics. They are two of the best sources (I bought mine from Bombay in 2016, and it has worked flawlessly).

Also, you want a machine that has been hardware-modified (not software).

I wonder if Criterion will do some big boxset for Kurosawa films. There are several I want to pick up, but I’d be worried they’d come out with it after

I got both my region-free players on 220-electronics. Recommended.

I'm not an expat but going region free allows me to get many British TV shows I love that are never going to a release stateside. Like the last three seasons of The Avengers which I look forward to getting. Also, while they are not BluRay yet, many of the BBC Region 2 TV shows DVDs are much cheaper than there American counterparts.

I got my player on eBay from 220, but I see my model is no longer available. But look at the 220 and Bombay stores on eBay and Amazon. Going region free allows me to open myself up to so many great Eureka, Arrow, and Studiocanal titles that are MIA in Region A or never will see a US release like many of the Studiocanal UK war films(Dunkirk, The Colditz Story, Ice Cold in Alex, The Cruel Sea, The Dam Busters), the Eureka Fortune Star films that are owned by Miramax in the US, and select Pam Grier films from Arrow that are superior to there Olive Region A counterparts.

The only problem I have now is what titles do I get now since there's an endless amount of films I can get now. Though, this is a situation I love to have.

My copy of Berlin Alexanderplatz arrived today.

Beautiful digipak.

Unfortunately i’m right in the middle of a Game of Thrones full series marathon, so it may be a couple of weeks before I can start it.

But it’s there...sitting on the bookshelf...watching me.

The night is dark...and full of Fassbinder.

It’s not as weird. But it does have gore and blood, and similar themes of technology. It’s more straightforward though, and not as ‘intimate’.
