The 1080/60 designation would certainly tell it's interlaced on the disc, but doesn't distinguish native 60i vs 50i that the player converted. If your player could be forced to output Disc Source AND Tv were 50 compatible then the INFO screen might read it as 50, but thats a lot of ifs.

A BDinfo scan would probably tell the difference, but the chance of a Fr disc being native 60i isn't high. The timing difference is still interesting to know why 111 vs 116, but that would probably take a bit more free time to unwind. At this point, I'm pretty sure the French item is just a sped up master whether it's pitch corrected (I think it is) or not

If there's more info that my player can reveal, I'm happy to give it a go if anyone can give me instructions. But it does seem convenient that the 116/111 time difference = the 4% speed-up rate.

If you had an OPPO (not sure on other players) you could check your setup TV as a Multifreq or NTSC/PAL and then force source direct -- maybe it might. Not sure I'd do that if you're not sure if your TV could accept a 50Hz signal. I know some other players have this capability, but I only know the OPPO names.

If your remote has a RESOLUTION button you could cycle through those and see if it ever allows a PAL or 50Hz readout. So much if dependent on your equipment.

Regardless of the 50/60 deal, I'd love to be able to set up a dual screen or split screen and have the Criterion DVD and French BD run side by side for 30 minutes from the same starting frame - see if they skip scenes or if the Fr disc just gets further out of synch with the DVD over time. That would certainly tell you which master they used for the BD. Over 30 minutes the BD would be about 70 seconds ahead if it's just a speedup issue and not actually cut scenes

Given that the 30th Anniversary would be June 30th, I can see it being a July title (as well as being a popular B&N sale title too)

Apparently, Criterion has The Saga of Gösta Berling as it has the Janus logo at the start of the film. When I asked the KL Insider if they had it and they said no, I think means its quite safe that Criterion is going to release this one.

The player/remote seem to be pretty basic. Certainly no "Resolution" button. As for a comparison, I could only do it by watching them sequentially and timing things. Not very technical I know, but I'm limited by a rudimentary set-up.

Not critical. This has already veered a bit off the reservation anyway though the title is somewhat in Criterion's domain if not the disc itself.

I'll assumed some things about the disc are true and maybe the next order I make from France I'll add the Lean Great Expectations/Oliver Twist 2 film bluray just for fun unless Criterion announces a better solution

John Woo's wuxia film Last Hurrah for Chivalry is the film of the week for the Criterion Channel (alongside Umbrellas of Cherbourg) and it opens with the Janus logo. This pretty much confirms a disc release in the near future.

And Eureka just announced their own disc, so maybe this will be coming sooner than later.

I'm about to start my own binge of "Game of Thrones" in fact. I was going to wait until the whole thing was over, but finally decided against that. I'm worried that there's no way I'll be able to go spoiler free. It's just too much of a cultural "thing" when all is said and done.

Unfortunately that means I only have 9 days, so I need to get on that.
