I have 2 first gen Fire Sticks and got the message on both. Emailed support and here was the response:

The reason you’re having trouble right now is because Criterion is using DRM (Digital Rights Management) and HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) in order to comply with the technical requirements, anti-piracy provisions, and territorial restrictions of their agreements with major studios and independent rights holders around the world. These technologies help prevent unauthorized playback and copying, but unfortunately they aren’t compatible with all viewing setups.

In order for a protected video to play back on your setup, your Fire TV and the TV it’s linked to need to be compatible with DRM and HDCP. You can check out this article for more information about DRM and HDCP.

While Fire TVs are generally supported, some models (especially older units) are not compatible with the way DRM is implemented on the app. I know it never goes over well to recommend upgrading your device, but this is likely the only way to access Criterion’s content on Fire TV (assuming the incompatibility isn’t related your TV).

In case it helps, Criterion also has an app for Apple TV, Roku, and Android TV.
So I ordered a new damn Fire Stick last night.

At this point I'm just going to binge watch as much stuff as I can that they haven't released yet on bluray and then cancel once the one-month trial is complete. My initial enthusiasm has waned. Between streaming issues, the lack of compatible devices, and only being able to find about 15 movies that I really want to watch, I just don't see myself using the service enough to justify the price.

I do this all of the time.

An iPhone is the only way to watch Lawrence of Arabia, Ran, and The Searchers.

I think the biggest issue is that I just want an option to see every movie they have available in a list format alphabetically or listed by genre. Filmstruck and Hulu do something similar, and I found so much content just going through the list that I do seeing a few curated collections. I don't want to have to search for every movie in the Janus/Criterion library separately to see if it's available or not.

Thanks for posting this. Makes sense. Maybe I'll splurge and buy a new Fire Stick. Both of my Fire devices are ancient first gen pieces. The Fire TV still works really well though so I'll keep that in place and just forego Criterion channel on that TV. That first gen Firestick though has never been all that great.

Maybe this will help tide over the whiners while Criterion works on adding browsing features.

So how do I know whether it's my Fire Stick that's the problem or my HDTV? I bought my HDTV in 2010.

Have the Fire TV Cube and 2 Fire TV sticks(2016 version). Cube worked great with no problems. First stick connected to a Sony just had the spinning circle when starting. Second Stick connected to a Vizio, would start movie, but only showed CC and heard audio, but no video. Being stubborn, disconnected power to stick, removed stick with adapter and connected without adapter and video showed. Put adapter back on, connected and everything worked. So went back to Sony, disconnected power, then removed stick with adapter, plugged in power to the stick and then connected stick with adapter and it worked. Guess it may be worth a shot for you to try before buying another Stick. Did have to go to the web site to activate each display with a code like most apps on the Fire.

So it looks like I'm out of luck with an older firestick, getting that same message that video will not play securely. Does anyone know how to add an app to the "internet" section of a panasonic st-50? I guess there's a good chance that won't work anyway, given that the tv is even older than the firestick. I've got 4 ways to play through apps (firestick, chromecast, wdtv, & the tv itself) & none of them will play the criteron channel! (I get that the last 2 are long in the tooth)

why not just nose around and see what's there?

you could try starting with the columbia noir. or one of the many double features they've set up? or why not try an agnes varda movie? or fellini? or lynch?

THESE ARE ALL OPTIONS FROM THE MAIN PAGE. EXPLORE!

Anyone watch Elephant Man? Is the C at the beginning of it? Is The Trial there? If so, how does that start?

The Paramount logo is the only logo attached to The Elephant Man.

Pure speculation time.

Is there a chance we can get similar sets to the Bergman boxset for Kiarostami, Kar-Wai, Fassbinder and Kurosawa?

Anyone else think it possible or me just being wishful?

I'd put money on their big box set of 2019 being a complete Kurosawa. It's been ten years since the AK100 set, they haven't released one of his films since 2016 (Dreams), and they shouldn't be unable to include any of his films. Not to mention it would probably be a gigantic seller on the same level as Bergman.
