And Armageddon has lines like this:

Quote:
You know, Harry, we’re sitting on 4 million ponds of fuel, one nuclear weapon, and a thing that has 200,000 moving parts — built by the lowest bidder. Makes you feel good, doesn’t it?

Really pleasantly surprised to see 1984. Never seen it but I reread the book recently. Still one of my favorites.

Damn, this is a HUGE month.

Do The Right Thing and Klute could each be considered highlight-of-the-year releases in terms of reaching broad audiences for a Criterion title, especially considering this is Klute's first release on the format anywhere.

Then you have 1984, another very mainstream (still for a Criterion, of course) title, which would be the highlight of any other month.

And all three are being released in the same month?

Such a move makes me think that Criterion is moving towards some drastic conclusion: Either that they might be stopping making physical media, or that they are going to start releasing on UHD. Let's hope for the latter.

Nineteen Eighty-Four is the most terrifying work of fiction I've read.

The line that gives me chills: "Power is not a means, it is an end."

The movie is a welcome addition to the collection.

I'm always looking for dystopian fiction that's on the same level as Nineteen Eighty-Four. A few of my favorites: Huxley's Brave New World, David Karp's One and The Scarlet Empire by David Parry. The latter two don't get nearly the attention they deserve for being great.

I haven't seen anything by Fassbinder, and The BRD Trilogy sounds very interesting to me so I just might start there.

In for Klute.

The Gods of Foxcroft by David Levy & Yvgeny Zamatin’s We are other excellent dystopian novels

Then I shall do the same.

I'll also be picking up 1984. I've not seen that either, but judging by all the enthusiasm it sounds like this film will grant me wings and a pack of smokes.

I'm lukewarm on We. The Gods of Foxcroft has been added to my list. It sounds fascinating. I appreciate the suggestions.

I was hoping Europa (known as Zentropa) would get the Blu-Ray release, but I'm still glad to see 1984 getting the Criterion treatment.

You just sold me. I'm in for Klute, 1984 and upgrading my DVD of Do the Right Thing as well.

We should reach Spine #1000 before the end of the year, and I'd expect it to be a big release. Citizen Kane, maybe?

Either way, it was my favourite movie of last year and I would like it on my shelf please.
Cold War looks spectacular on Blu Ray. One of the best Black & White Blu Rays that I have seen.

I also loved it, along with "The Rider", the best 2 movies that I have viewed recently.

A+++ month! Possibly the best slate of Criterion announcements I've ever seen for a single month in my honest opinion.

I can't even begin to rave about 1984, one of my favorite sci-fi/survivalist films. I find this movie strangely re-watchable and never get tired of this film every time I see it. John Hurt is unforgettable in this movie and the story is more timely than ever today. The cover art for this release kicks ass too (I'd like a 6 foot poster of this).

I'm really thrilled to see Do the Right Thing having a much needed upgrade. The raw acting performances in the film are as hot as a volcano about ready to blow its lid off. It's a perfect Summer escape film.

Klute is a '70s classic and how could anyone not appreciate Jane Fonda in this one.

I saw Europa Europa in a non-movie theater when it came out in 1990. I still remember it being shown in a converted live theater that once in a while screened actual films. I must have been 12 years old and it was one of the first movies about the Holocaust I'd ever watched. I remember meeting actual Holocaust survivors from my city who were at the screening, so it was an important event.

The BRD Trilogy is one solid upgrade, though I have to say I'm not too familiar with The Baker's Wife.
