Hmm, at the end, there’s a screen about the 2017 restoration produced by Jeff Joseph/Sabucat.

Digital scan by Film & Video Transfer, Chatsworth, CA.

Cineaste Restoration by Thad Komorowski.

So it appears the print showed on TCM was an earlier restoration, and the Criterion is from a brand new one.

The one on TCM was inconsistent, not terrible, considering the original negative was lost. Watchable.

I really enjoyed the film. Some guys just have bad luck, and run into crazy dames. Definitely one I’ll be adding to my collection.

I'd welcome a Criterion release of The Flower of My Secret.

I would be happy with The Prisoner of Shark Island being released on disc some day in the not-too-distant future.

I was always tempted to get that big Ford at Fox DVD boxset when it came out but, even at Costco, it was big $$$. Ahhh, those were the days when Costco carried DVDs and Blu-rays.

Michael Imperioli's top 10 are up. Excellent article. One of the best written top 10s I've read.

Did anyone here watch Orson Welles' 'The Trial' today on TCM?

The version I worked on was from Jeff’s own 16mm print. I’m sure the new one will undoubtedly be better, being from a 35mm source.

I just ordered that from Hamilton Books for $40. I figure that, with all the movies in that box, there will likely be enough that never make it to Blu to justify it at that cost. I know this set has a reputation for loose discs, but the one I ordered was perfect, as far as that goes.

Thank you for your comment, Thad. The work you guys do to restore films is amazing, and incredibly appreciated.

The print TCM showed didn’t exhibit any age spotting, damage or extraneous noise of any kind that I could see. Whatever cleanup was performed was well done. It wasn’t until I saw that end card that I read Pro-B’s comments, and found that the original negative had been lost. That explains the softness of the picture. Any restorative work is inherently limited by the source.

The experience of watching the film was enjoyable, certainly in large part to the absence of any kind of distracting damage. I’m at best a novice when it comes to understanding the process of film restoration, but I know I’m not alone when I say thank you, and others like you, who work tirelessly to preserve our film history. While I’m saddened so many movies have been lost, I’m grateful for the efforts made to ensure what we do have still can be enjoyed by future generations.

I agree - those are great comments for each of the films. And there couldn't be anything less surprising than to see who his favorite filmmaker is - he didn't even cheat, and lump them together (as I would have).

I’m 10 episodes into Berlin Alexanderplatz and there’s still five hours left to go.

I’m struggling.

The finish line is within reach, but I’m struggling.

We each owe a death...there are no exceptions.

But oh God, sometimes the Green Mile seems so long.

I didn't, but I'm curious why you ask. Was there something notable about the showing?

Default Criterion official website

I went to the pages for DO THE RIGHT THING and SWING TIME on criterion.com, and they each have a video clip from the films. What I don't know for sure is if these are examples of the new restorations of these films. I could see film grain in the clips (so that's fantastic). DO THE RIGHT THING looked like it had a LOT of detail, but I wasn't so sure about SWING TIME. I'm glad that SWING TIME had film grain, but I'm not sure if there was any detail (I read it had come from a 2K digital restoration). I guess we'll all have to see for ourselves when the Blu-ray gets reviewed. I'm hoping that there will be detail in SWING TIME; I've been looking forward to this release since I read the announcement, and I'm also looking forward to DO THE RIGHT THING.

Just take a break. Binge watching is a ridiculous endeavor in any regards but I would say just plain dumb with Berlin. Take it slow and savor it, the last five hours are beautiful.

Apparently Criterion got the rights to it from StudioCanal. I was just wondering if it opened with the wacky C when it was shown on TCM yesterday.

I'd agree about binge-watching "Berlin", but I disagree in general. I really enjoy it sometimes. The first show I ever binged was "Gossip Girl" and that was crazy fun. Then I think was "Downton Abbey" which was fab. I'm in the process of finishing up the first 7 seasons of "Game of Thrones" but I took a break and watched both seasons of "Jessica Jones."

There are others, but those definitely stand out. I just enjoy it. Heck, "Gossip Girl" was 121 episodes, and I forget exactly how long it took me, but I'm pretty sure that's ALL I did for however many days I sat in front of my computer.

It’s definitely a common way to watch stuff these days, and the streaming services make it that much easier with the auto-start feature, or whatever that’s called. I’ve even caught myself watching the occasional back-to-back episode when they leave you with a cliffhanger or something I’ve gotta know.

But I still appreciate the experience of the week-to-week airing of things, where you have some time to reflect, and then anticipate what is coming. I try my best to replicate this when I have access to whole series, hell, it took me months to watch Berlin the last time and it was thoroughly enjoyable that way.

I get your drift though, with the proliferation of media and shows these days you almost have to be binging and watching all the time to keep up. Still I like that HBO and others keep the old school scheduling system and don’t dump entire series. Because if they did that with GoT I just might be trapped.

The tough stop around here is the, "OMG! How are they going to wring this out?!" That's happened a good deal in GoT. But I LOVE it! Those are vicious bastards.

See, I have no way of spending my time other than realistically watching this stuff and getting deep down into it. These people are messed up. And I adore it This is why I wanted to get into GoT so deeply. Tell me I'm wrong (NOT YOU), there's an answer here. These are screwed up people. I've never seen such people.

Are we this small?
