Ah, I didn't know that Kadokawa released it on Blu. Was that a licensing situation or does Toei no longer own it?

Kadokawa's website says they have release and distribution rights. Also, "(c)KADOKAWA 1981" is listed. Toei has done theatrical distribution for films they don't own. Same with Toho. In Japan, theaters are divided by distributor, so it's quite common for a film not produced by either company to be released theatrically under them. |

I recently went through the Cassavetes 5 films set and then decided I need to see Love Streams as well, so I purchased it and gave it a watch. I've read in certain places that this film is an easier and lighter watch than A Woman Under the Influence, Opening Night, and The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. From my own experience I have to disagree. I found Love Streams a harder watch. By saying this I am by no means implying that it is a lesser film. It's a magnificent film. To me it was just harder to endure. I'm quite sure that this has something to do with my own experiences in life. But not sure what exactly.
Rowland's, who is obviously a phenomenal actress, plays a woman in mental deterioration, with a brother who has problems of his own. The whole film is outstanding, as I'm sure everyone else here knows, so I just want to mention a couple things about the film that really resonated with me. When Cassavetes character is talking to his son he tells him that he doesn't like men, and that if he wanted to know what "men" are like, "real men", then he should visit a truck stop sometime. I really liked that scene. I know what Cassavetes is saying there. Now, I'm not trying to downplay the male gender, I am a male, but I just totally get what he's saying. The second scene I want to mention is near the end when Cassavetes is setting in his chair, sees the car pull up, looks over at the man setting in the chair next to him and says "who the f* are you! " That scene says it all. It told me what the underlying issues are, issues which are more often than not, the case. Oh, I cannot not mention the exquisite ballerina dream sequence. Totally surreal. It does seem a crime to mention only three scenes from the film when there is much more that can easily be discussed, but that's all I have for now. After watching these six films it's very easy to see why John Cassavetes is a highly praised filmmaker. |

It's Leon Gast and Jerry Garcia.
Double clue for The Grateful Dead Movie and When We Were Kings. Looks like Gast is wearing a leather jacket. Maybe his Hell's Angels doc, too. Boxset? |

It definitely can look like Jerry Garcia, just the lips being drawn that way made me think Coppola, but that definitely looks like Leon Gast on the left.
I was just hoping for somehow more Coppola releases! |

That's a good find, it took me a second glance before I noticed that his long hair is tied back, you can see some of it by the neck and shoulder strap of the guitar. I also think that a drawing meant to represent the common traditional Jerry Garcia image would have the gray beard that we see in that picture.
BTW, where is that picture? I just scrolled around jerrygarcia.com for a while, and all the pics (either photos or drawings) I saw were the traditional long haired ones, including the actual banner on the site. I don't doubt you that it's there, I'm just curious how long it took to actually find it amid all of the other normal pictures. |

I refuse to believe that's how Jason Polan would draw Jerry Garcia - especially because he was already the clue for Dead Man and he looks nothing like this drawing:

I hope it is When We Were Kings, because it is fantastic and has never had a very good release.

I'm thinking its more of a clue for When We Were Kings than anything to do with Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead.
Totally doubtful but...I also thought of Farewell to the King (written/directed by John Milius, who co-wrote Apocalypse Now, which Francis Ford Coppola directed too). And that guy with the beard def. looks like Coppola! Hell, it might even look like Milius when he was younger too! |
