Finished House tonight. What a freaking ride, oh my gosh. Kung Fu remains my favorite. How badass is that chick?

What the hell...this is the way it was released...viva la difference!
There are two that were FANTASTIC in the original cases (I still replaced them all)

EDIT:

I still have all of the original Digipacks....... I'm not sure why..... but I kept them.

This would be one of the 'two' I referred to..... the other would be "The Last Metro" with the cut-outs on the case..... these two cases were designed with the digipacks in mind, so didn't translate as well to the new cases.....

I'm a bad person to ask, because I re-buy old DVD versions for minor upgrades..... get better DVD players to get better playback, etc.... I find very marginal improvement as a "Gain" and I know some people want that "It's like seeing it for the first time" feeling, and anything less isn't that impressive to them.....

With that (all of that) said.... I have Seven Samurai on DVD from Criterion (two actually) and the upgrade is very noticeable...... I won't say that all of the print damage etc was "magic-erasered" out, but the amount of detail restored or I should say "realized" in every shot is just remarkable.....

It's a huge release, so if you're a fan, I don't think I'd risk passing up the current sale as an excuse to pick this one up..... I think I've said it ad-nauseum, but when you can get a CC title at this heavy of a discount, just get it.... if you have buyer's remorse, it's easy to recoup some, all, or more than what you paid to get it

It's the "bling" addition.

I just watched it once the day after it arrived on my doorstep, and really enjoyed it, but despite really enjoying it, I don't think I'll truly appreciate it until the 3rd or 4th flashback

I am quite torn to as they say double dip. Just would like to hear some thoughts on the subject, I have read numerous posts that fellow forum aficionados have picked this title up but do not recall any posts comparing this to the Criterion DVD. Many thanks
My copy is scheduled for arrival this Thursday morning. I will offer my opinion as I am most eager to see for myself.

Just watched "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" What a great performance by David Bowie, the other actors actors in it were stellar as well. Gonna watch "Charade" tomorrow, the last time I saw that one was on a cheapie public domain DVD copy of it...

Thought you guys might find wanna have a crack at this:
http://www.facebook.com/notes/the-cr...t/451540743561

Criterion's Facebook page is having a contest--take a screengrab of one of your favorite shots from a Criterion film, post it on their page, and on Friday they'll pick a few of their favorites. The winners get a DVD/Blu-ray of their choice.

I think that narrows it down to "Solaris or Ivan's Childhood".

Ivan's Childhood would be a good one, most definitely.

Can anyone tell me if the Barns and Noble sale is worth looking at if I'm importing the discs to the UK? Looking at their international shpping rates
I'm not sure it would equal a real saving. Seems like any money saved in the
sale would then have to be spent on shipping.

It's a bit tricky. Order only one title, and the shipping costs are pretty big, but order too many, and your shipment might end up at customs . I usually order three items at a time, that way they cost about 20 euros a piece, which is pretty cheap for a Criterion.

Thanks for the info, and the quick reply. Think I'll probably pass on the sale for the moment, and hold out hope that future desirables crop up on playusa, much like The Thin Red Line did, blissfully. Still have to carve out a wad of time and check that disc out!

Try to get as many CC discs during the sale as you can.

Same here with NOTH...should look great!

I plan to use a 10% coup that B & N posted recently to use with Sherlock Jr., plus the $5 coup if I can.

I just saw another 15% coup good through this weekend...might use it for the 3 Silents DVD.

I'm hoping that Best Buy carries the BBS set...I've got (2) gift cards to use that would cover it.

I'm glad I ordered Metropolis from MoC...one less set to worry about paying for!

I live in the UK and just bought Thin Red Line and Paths of Glory in the B&N sale. I got the expedited shipping option and in total it cost me $53.

If I had bought it from, say, movietyme (where I get most of my US imports) it probably would have cost the about the same... in pounds. It works out as about £16 per BD, which is pretty good. I probably saved between £8 on each one. So yeah, it's worth it if you ask me. You save a couple of quid if you get the cheaper shipping option too.

However, as KubrickFan points out - for one item you're not saving that much, and there is a chance it'll be caught at customs, though you'll probably end up paying no more than the amount you saved on the sale if that does happen...

Ivan's Childhood was in the Amazon.com "vote" that Howards End "won", wasn't it?

Kino owns all the other Tarkovsky worth watching. Yawn. I don't know why they are wasting their time with Solaris and Ivan's Childhood because besides being his weakest work, they already have sufficient DVD releases. Andrei Rublev is begging for a redo, considering their version was non-anamorphic and had very little in the way of supplements. Disappointing.

Hmmm? Should I help? I honestly don't know where it is, but have you tried looking in the B&N Sales thread? It might be more obvious in that thread.

On CriterionForum, seems as though Criterion will release in Sept, 2 Chabrol films, Les Cousins and Le Beau Serge. Finally! More French New Wave coming.
