I used the coupon for $5 off a $20+ movie, plus member discount, plus the 50% off CC titles in July, and got 'em for about $14.06.

It should work unless something has changed in their system. The wording on the coupon, however, states that the B&N regular price be $20 or more before discounts are taken off, so it should work no matter what.

I did the same thing/the same way and also got it for $14.06 (including tax), but the manager HAD to do an override. I used it on Charade...but she didn't want to do a second override with Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, as she was afraid the "system" would lock her out.

I'm not saying that it can't be done (we've both proven that), but contrary to what the coups say, the system is having the last say.

I would hope that when I pick up the von Sternberg silents and Seven Samurai later (both over $20, even after all discounts), that I'll be able to use the $5 coup as well.

Fair enough...I think that, based on this new bit o' info, I will make multiple visits since B&N is across the highway from my evening job. I will try tonight for the first one.

Good luck...I'm going to see how I fair later.

My local B & N is "on the way home" and about 10-15 mins from where I live, so I'm in the same boat as you.

I might try taking MCML BD (Bowie...don't want to type it) and bring it to another location slightly further away and see if I can do a "paper return" and use the $5 coup there...unfortunately, it's like playing the lottery. Depends on the store and who's manning the register.

The woman I always seem to get at my "usual" store is nice...but she's a manager and usually goes by the book.

Roommate gave me a check today so I went ahead and cashed it and was able to score:

The Magician
The Red Shoes
By Brakhage

Figured this would be as good of a time as any to nab By Brakhage, and it more than any of the Criterion titles seems like a big wildcard. Not quite sure what I'm getting myself into here. :-D

The big question is why did they waste their time with The Darjeeling Limited. haha They're not really wasting their time with Soalris since many people adore that film. Plus they own the rights and the DVD copy was a craptacular transfer. I understand your argument for Ivan's Childhood though. Many titles are begging for a redo and I'm sure it'll be one of the earlier collection titles that will be given a proper re-issue.

Brakhage isn't for everyone. It caters to those who like non-narrative experimental film. You can see his influence on film though. For instance, the opening credits for "Se7en". The real autopsy was a real eye-opener for me in college haha.

Canada Oh no, there goes Francois Truffaut... Go Go Godzilla!

I guess you can expect some first time CC reviews from me soon enough. Check out my Hall & Oates or for you older St. Louis Blues fans, check out my Hull & Oates. Insert image please...

I can see that. There is a Sonic Youth music video which seems highly influenced by his work, too. I'm likening it to walking through an art gallery. Lots of neat things going on, but not the sort of thing that most people would marathon all evening.

Thumbs up Excellent.

Thanks for the coupon info. $19.99 is a good deal, but $14.06 is even better. I doubt my B&N will have much though, so I'll probably order my movies online.

I have a couple questions:

How long is the B&N sale?

Do you think Amazon eventually price matches, as they did last year?

Hi,

Here's the 'official' note from Criterion:

Dear Criterion collectors,

Here’s a sale we’re sure you won’t want to miss. Barnes & Noble is currently offering 50 percent off all Criterion titles, both in stores and online. Every Criterion, Eclipse, and Essential Art House release, Blu-ray or DVD, is on sale, including some of our latest releases, like Paths of Glory, House, and The Thin Red Line. You can also take 50 percent off preorder prices for coming-soon titles, like Antichrist, Modern Times, and The Night of the Hunter, that hit the street before the sale ends on November 21. Place your order now. There’s no better time to build the perfect Blu-ray or DVD collection.

Happy viewing,
The Criterion Collection

As for an Amazon PM, your guess is as good as anyone else's, I'd say. It has been almost a whole week, though, with no action ... so I'd assume no.

Sale lasts until 11/21. Amazon pretty much didn't match B&N in July, so take that for what it's worth. I think I read that with the sale a year ago, amazon didn't start matching until a week+ after the B&N sale started.

I hope Amazon does a bit of matching, because I've had a problem here and there with my shipping so far from Barnes.com.

Alright, I kind of figured the 21st from reading the email. I guess we have to wait and see with Amazon.

I guess, I'll get these:
Yojimbo/Sanjuro
Seven Samurai
The Wages of Fear

and wait before making a decision on others.
