The Circus and Local Hero for me. I just discovered that Fists in the Pocket is in the Criterion Channel and I'm going to watch it before I decide to buy it. I also might blind-buy Cluny Brown. Overall, a nice month.

I'm sure you have heard of John Waters and of all his masterpieces of cinema (here is hoping Desperate Living is his next Criterion release). Are you trying to tell us this story doesn't sound interesting to you? From Wikipedia....

Overweight housewife Francine Fishpaw (Divine) watches her upper middle-class family's life crumble in their suburban Baltimore home. Her husband Elmer (David Samson) is a polyester-clad lout who owns an adult movie theater, causing anti-pornography protesters to picket the Fishpaws' house. Francine's Christian beliefs are also offended by the behavior of her children—Lu-Lu (Mary Garlington), her spoiled, promiscuous daughter, and Dexter (Ken King), her delinquent, glue-sniffing son who secretly derives pleasure from stomping on women's feet.
Francine's troubles are compounded by her cocaine-snorting mother La Rue (Joni Ruth White).

And on top of all that, it's in Odorama!

[Show spoiler]John Waters expressed his delight at having the film's audiences actually "pay to smell shit" on the commentary track of the film's 2004 DVD release.

Seriously, if you don't like this kind of stuff, you are just weird.....

Chaplin's The Circus is a curious blind-buy for me (will have to squeeze out a few bucks for that one), and I also like Local Hero too.

Funny that we have 1 brilliant release for artwork (Polyester) and 1 atrocious release for artwork (Cluny Brown) in the same month.

I wonder if they're going to release a horror film like they usually do every year. The horror releases are usually in September. I would love to see "I Walked with a Zombie" in October. Shout Factory hasn't announced Jacques Tourneur's masterpiece for a Blu-ray release.

Other titles that I want from Criterion:

"The Elephant Man"
"Raise the Red Lantern"
"Los Olvidados"
"Viridiana"
"The Spirit of the Beehive"
"Onibaba"

I would love to see Criterion get "The Conformist" and "Ran".

If Criterion ever releases it as a poster, please private message me, I'll pick up the tab.

I'm actually hoping the release (and all other Lewtons) comes from Shout themselves. They have done a great job with the already released movies and they use the original poster art on the cover. In fact I wish Criterion would pass on the Cat People license to Shout so they can do an HD version of the Val Lewton Horror Collection.

So this pretty much confirms that Criterion has Ran once again. However, Kagemusha is not present here. Didn't Criterion lose the rights to Kagemusha?
Can anyone verify whether Ran is sourced from the new restoration, or still using an older transfer?

I would also like to know this.

I wonder if spine 1000 will be an Akira Kurosawa boxset?

I was wondering if this would be the case as well. I only own Throne of Blood on blu ray, but would happily snap up a release similar to the Bergman box.

That would be a huge surprise announcement, but unless I'm mistaken, I don't think big box sets have their own spine numbers.

The streaming version of Ran starts with the Studio Canal logo.

It also doesn't necessarily mean they got the rights back for a disc release. Criterion Channel is doing many deals with studios for streaming rights for films they don't own for a physical release. However, they did carry over the bonus material they produced in the past.

UPDATE: Just taking a quick glance at the streaming version, the colors are more in line with the older release. It's hard to tell clarity as their streaming service is not up to the task of a high quality stream at the moment.

I was thinking the same. And it really wouldn't surprise me if #1000 is just whatever comes up next in line. Nothing against it, but #100 was the Beastie Boys collection.

Recently saw OUR MOTHER'S HOUSE and haven't been able to fully shake it. Would love Criterion to give it a once over and put out an edition.

Wouldn't that also mess up the spine numbers since there have been plenty of his titles upgraded to BD though a few still on DVD?

I just watched Throne of Blood and liked it but I suppose I may not be that familer with Macbeth having only seen the movie once and never reading or seeing the play.
