So I'm in Paris and wanted to ask if anyone has recommendations for film lovers while here? Like a cinema or perhaps a showing of a film that I shouldn't miss or a place I should visit. I'm here for two months.

Ahh, awesome! Went last Summer for a week. Check out Le Grand Rex if you can. They play movies there, but there is also a behind the scenes type of tour you can take. It's interactive, and pretty fun

Also, I would recommend stopping in at a cemetery or two. Most know and think about Pere Lachaise but there is also the Montmartre Cemetery which is home to Francois Truffaut and Renee Jeanne Falconetti…

I'm not a fan of Wes Anderson. I like The Royal Tenebaums and Grand Budapest Hotel, though I wish people would shut up about the latter. Enough already.

Anyway enough with that. I think Criterion's #1000 will be a UHD. Maybe Citizen Kane.

Wes Anderson's first two (BOTTLE ROCKET, RUSHMORE) are the only films of his that I'd watch again. I've considered buying the Criterion BD of BOTTLE ROCKET, but just can't seem to commit. I'm glad he's out there, making stuff that I won't see but which isn't superhero-related.

Also, Criterion's #1000 will be James Toback's FINGERS (1978). No exceptions.

The French Cinematheque is a must.

Any shot at Criterion getting Dawn of the Dead? If ever a movie deserved the criterion treatment...

That’s his worst film IMHO, but all the others are worth seeing though, especially The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore and The Darjeeling Limited.

At the very least, they'd get Craig Barron and Ben Burtt to do a piece on the film's special effects and sound design; another Simon Cowall interview, plus interviews/pieces on Gregg Toland, Bernard Herrmann, Robert Wise's editing, etc.

I mean, they made Dr. Strangelove worth buying just on the account of including the trailers and the brilliant packaging.

Though, I think a Kane release would primarily be tied to a release of The Other Side of the Wind so that they were releasing Welles' first and last films together.

I'm definitely one for second chances. But with so many titles in my to-watch pile and on my to-buy list, it's hard to make a case for further forays into his catalog. Maybe one day when I'm caught up.

Yeah, I told myself there was no way I was going to buy that film again. When I saw it at Costco for 1/2 price, I knew resistance was futile. I am so weak...

I know exactly what you mean but two thirds of my movie watching this year has been rewatches of films I didn’t necessarily take to first time around (some watched previously many years ago and others watched previously more recently) and I have come around to quite a few on a second and sometimes even third viewing!

And some of those have now ended up now cracking my top 50/100 all time (Nashville, The Docks Of New York, The General).

Zissou is my favourite of his, but Darjeeling almost ties it, as does Moonrise Kingdom...

I hated Zissou the first time I wached it; loved it the second time. I’ve seen Darjeeling twice, and find it abysmal. There’s just no accounting for taste.

I'm assuming you're referring to the original. I actually prefer Snyder's remake. Then again, it has a fun cast, and I am a pretty strong Snyder fan in general.

I agree with you - never understood the love for that one. Its my least favorite of his by far. My favorite is Darjeeling. I really like Grand Budapest, Bottle Rocket, isle of Dogs, Mr Fox and Royal Tenenbaums also.

Yes, I was referring to the original. Zack Snyder’s remake is great in its own right, but I believe it has multiple Blu Ray editions in print. Romero’s version is OOP on Blu Ray. It’s one of my favorite movies and I’d love to see a new high quality transfer, tons of extras, etc.

As it is, I’m stuck with my DVD copy because the Blu Ray goes for like $100+

Yeah, those OOPs hurt the bank account. No denying that.

Well, here's hoping you get your wish!
