That negates the sale- you'd be better off just ordering from Amazon at regular prices.

Made my order and got Expedited Shipping.

I really dislike B&N's site or, rather, the way one navigates it. I mean, who the heck puts all the titles beginning with 'A' at the start, for instance? Anyhow ...

Rushmore

Summer Hours

Dheepan

War and Peace

It Happened One Night

Les Cousins

Pan’s Labyrinh

The Magnificent Ambersons

What’s everyone’s experience with War and Peace as far as repeat viewings?

431 minutes is a lot.

I just sold my copy of Berlin Alexanderplatz, because I knew I would never watch it again.

...it’s made me gun shy about blind buys with long runtimes.

I went to my local store and ordered:

With my membership and gift cards, I got it for $30! Now I just hope it arrives in good condition.

I wish I could help you out, but seeing as I've never seen it ...

Does anyone has seen Truffaut's Day for Night? As a film major, I'm intrigued by it but I want to know your opinion before I blind-buy it. Thanks!

Is it safe to order one movie from the sale, or is Barnes & Noble packaging bad?

I've watched it from beginning to end at least 25 times over the years. I own two copies of the Criterion blu-ray (in case one fails). I have a blu-ray rip archived/backed up.

But, .... still no guarantee you will like it. I would use the word 'charming' to describe it. It's fast-paced, and has a breezy amusing tone. As you probably know, Truffaut, himself, plays the movie director in the film, and does a great job -- I mean, who knew he could also act?

For those of you who chose to blind buy Criterion releases, is it because your local library system doesn't have Criterion films, or do you not wish to subscribe to the Criterion Channel?

I can certainly understand doing a blind buy if you have no way of watching the film. But my local library system has almost every Criterion film ever released. Maybe my library system is better than most. I also have a subscription to the Criterion Channel. For less than $8 a month I have access to most Criterion releases.

Before I purchase a Criterion film I almost always watch it first. There are far too many Criterion films that I don't want to own. I may really like the movie, but I know it's not something I'll watch again. So I see no need to buy it.

If I enjoy the movie then I'll buy it.

For single TV on DVD box sets I've ordered, they've slapped it into a form fitting cardboard envelope that offers about as much protection as if they'd just slapped the mailing label directly onto the set and sent it out.

Nothing's ever arrived damaged for me, though... luckily. But the chances are high.

I believe they use a cardboard envelope. I haven't had problems ordering single movies from them in the past, but I probably wouldn't order a digipak from them. I generally get most of my B&N sale items as in-store pickups as I like to get that extra 10% membership discount.

Ordered Dr. Strangelove and 12 Angry Men from BN.

I normally just do the Criterion Flash Sales, but Strangelove has been showing out of stock on their website and Amazon. I just want to be sure I get it.

Unfortunately, I don't live in the US so I don't a library that carries Criterion films. I'm also subscribed to the Criterion Channel but, although it has some films by Truffaut, it doesn't have Day for Night.

Many public libraries also offer Kanopy, a free online streaming service that has many Criterion titles available. I am able to watch four titles per month with my library card.

I will say that The Criterion Channel has significantly cut down on my Criterion purchases and *gasp* made me regret previous blind buys, which now seem overpriced in comparison.

However, it should noted that The Criterion Channel - while having a wide selection - does not have everything. Plus, movies do cycle in and out - I'm actually currently trying to get through several of them that are expiring on June 30th (In a Lonely Place and Drive a Crooked Road are the two of the best I've watched this week).

As for the library, I've picked up Criterions from library sales in the past - but always DVDs, so I assume that's what's available to check out. I'd be very surprised if they had any Criterion Blu-rays.

With that said, I am hoping to pick up 12 Angry Men from this sale. But that isn't a blind buy for me. It's a renowned and beloved classic, and I've seen it before. I was blown away when I first saw it, on my dad's recommendation, in probably my late teens.

Is 12 Angry Men a digipak? I don't think so, but I'm also not sure I've ever seen the Blu-ray in person.

Same here. Some libraries *glares jealously* actually offer more than four a month. Also, selection may vary depending on the library, from what I've heard.

I also have Hoopla through a different library. That doesn't really have any Criterions though. I can check out 8 a month through that. I assume the selection is the same everywhere, but I don't know that for certain. The PQ isn't great and the video is very juddery - at least on a Roku. It's notable for getting certain Shudder "exclusives" like Mandy and Summer of 84.

Nice. I should look into that. How is the PQ?
