He's one of those actors who feels miscast in a lot of things.

Epic Roberts played Ben Siegal once, though he is no Warren Beatty.
If you want to watch Eric Roberts in a movie as "a talking cat", and laugh and be stupefied at how ridiculous and bad the movie is, try this |

Speaking of which, The Pope Of Greenwich Village would be a good title for Criterion. It's developed something of a reputation over the years and even Mickey Rourke still deems it his best film. Its director has helmed a lot of great stuff. Last edited by rip63; 07-04-2019 at 04:42 AM. |

Today I went and picked up "The Heiress" (1949) on Blu-ray and there was a very nice, polite young man working the register at Barnes & Noble. My husband had some digital "gift cards" that I thought were coupons that I was able to use (1) on my movie and it brought it down to $16+.
I asked the cashier if I could use coupons and he said, "Of course you can!" So very nice. |

Speaking of Rourke in the Criterion thread, I picked up and revisited Rumble Fish the other night. It still lacks the nostalgic value or poignant punch that The Outsiders has for me, but my appreciation for it has grown with time (and I love that we're no sooner than 1 minute into the movie and we've already encountered Laurence Fishburne, Tom Waits, Nicolas Cage, Chris Penn and Matt Dillon.) I used to think that "80s Rouke" was totally overblown, but truthfully, the guy did have a pretty special streak that makes him stand out as one of the premier actors of that decade (the irony of course is that he was simultaneously considered an heir apparent to Brando and De Niro and box office poison.) I usually get into a zone every 2-3 years where I load up on his stuff. If you look at his work that decade, there's something for everybody; Diner has long been my favorite, but Angel Heart might just represent his "peak". Then again, Pope and Barfly are two very popular choices. Barfly has long been championed as an ideal Criterion candidate, but every year passes with no mention (still kicking myself for not picking up the region-free Aussie release.) Still haven't seen Heaven's Gate, but I've debated picking it as both a western, a Cimino, and yes, a Rourke fan. How small is his part there? Last edited by SeanJoyce; 07-04-2019 at 07:21 AM. |

Watched the Breakfast Club since I picked it up during the sale. Damn that will not work in today's society. the extended and deleated scenes made more sense to the movie but paced slightly different. It's a good movie that represents the 80's well. I can't believe I forgot that that they paired up except for Brian which is kinda sad though it would have been different if Brian did but then it seemed that brains don't attract girls per that.
Hoping to watch For All Mankind today since its the 4th. |

Regarding Rourke in Heaven's Gate, his role [Show spoiler] , but it is memorable. I like the film a lot, but it's a tricky one to recommend.

How funny that both Rourke and Dillon would go on to play Chinaski (and as aside, Factotum has Tomei, who would go on to co-star with Rouke in The Wrestler.) I've thought about grabbing TT's release of Eureka a couple times, but despite the cast, it just sounds so bizarre. Any opinion on that one? |

It just didn’t necessarily strike me as one of those classic, under appreciated pictures that deserved a Criterion release. Then again, i felt the same way about The Friends of Eddie Coyle the first time I saw it, but eventually came around to liking it much more. |

There’s only one Eric Roberts picture that deserves a Criterion release.
A phenomenally moving, existential journey into the deepest layers of the human condition. ER gives what might be the greatest performance since Brando in On the Waterfront. ...a masterclass in method acting. I cried the first time I saw it. [Show spoiler]

Just watched my copy of House of Games. Great flick! It'd been a while since I had seen it so it was a real treat revisiting it. Nice blu ray from Criterion too. Solid transfer (even if it's an older master) and audio. One of Mamet's best.

I know you're joking, but I don't care what anyone says: Best of the Best is great fun - AND it has the second best fight scene of the '80s (They Live is #1 and genuinely does deserve a Criterion release IMO). |

I've yet to see Eureka, but I'd like to. A friend who's a big fan of Roeg gave it a weak endorsement. Still, if I could get the right price, I would chance it. |
