I think the post was, Someone who went to the Criterion offices. Said they saw Criterion working on Blue Velvet and then talked to Peter Becker about Roma. It could have easily just been them saying it was great. I don’t remember anything confirmed about a home video release, yet.

If we could get 'Cold War' while we're at it, that would be lovely.

This is correct, they said they were “interested” in Roma. What that means is anyone’s guess.

I wish Criterion released Mifune: The Last Samurai since it goes nicely with his and Ak's films.

I still have yet to see it. I have only heard disappointing things and that if you are someone who has seen most of his work you don't need to bother.

So as someone who blind bought Seven Samurai, and absolutely loved it, I want to delve into more Akira Kurosawa. What would you all recommend from him. I already own the Yojimbo/Sanjuro box set, which I haven't watched for some strange reason. I am very interested in Ikiru, Throne of Blood and The Hidden Fortress. His later works seem to be divided among everyone, Dreams in particular

I love High and Low! It’s not samurai, but Mifune is a business man and it’s a drama.

I don't think I've ever checked that one out. Thanks, I'll add it to the list

Hidden Fortress is a must. George Lucas used it in creating Star Wars.

I would highly recommend Rashomon; after Seven Samurai, it is my favorite Kurosawa film. The three that you mentioned are all outstanding, but don't forget about High and Low, another great film.

If you're just looking for great Samurai movies then you should definitely give The Samurai Trilogy a watch.

Rashomon is also on my list, forgot to mention it. Also Kagemusha. All the films listed here seem to be the ones that pop up the most when Kurosawa is discussed. How is Ran and Dreams?

I have given that set some thought. Toshiro Mifune is just so much fun to watch. He reminds me a lot of Peter Cushing in a sense that he is always very good and elevates any film he is in

I may get criticized for this, but I think Ran is his best. The current Region A BD is not great but better than DVD. There has been a major restoration with a theatrical exhibition, but there has not been any news on a new release.

Ran, Yojimbo and Ikiru are allgreat ... I haven't seen any others (except Roshomon) which I concur with others is also great. I'm currently working through the list on the Criterion Channel.

I splurged on all of Kurosawa's releases a couple years ago and now I'm kicking myself for it with a boxset looking imminent.

Really want to revisit High and Low because I'm on a noir kick but I don't want to unwrap it if I'm forced to sell all of these.

If a box set is true, should I just wait then?

Nothing confirmed. Just pure speculation. A lot of his releases got remasters and it would make sense to release a set like the updated DVD AK boxset and the Ingmar Bergman collection seemed to sell real well. I personally hope it happens!
