I just grabbed the Les Blank box from Amazon. It's been on my mind again since seeing it recently reviewed here, and that extra 20% was too hard to pass up.

I just grabbed the Bergman set, never seen any of his films but at $120 I just couldn't resist.

My wallet is wincing in fearful anticipation.

I’m hoping to see The Trial and an Arkadin upgrade at some point as well

Armageddon was released by Criterion 20 years ago, and isn't Robocop widely considered to have artistic merits?

Armageddon still has a spine number and is recognized by them, Robocop only has artistic merit if you're a pretentious hipster who looks too deep into films. It's just satire on corporate America, but disguised a damn fun and goofy action movie.

Yeah, but it's designed to be taken fully at face value. There's nothing more to it, and the fact there's a MASSIVE franchise behind it shows that there's little artistic merit left with it.

Having a franchise doesn’t indicate much. ALIEN, Psycho and Silence of the Lambs have all spawned huge franchises (multiple films and even tv shows) and are all considered films of great artistic merit.

The fact that Robocop is al almost perfect chiasmus gives it more artistic merit than most "art" films, IMO. Almost no other film has the symmetry Robocop has, which is why it works so well.

All movies in which their creators completely 'sold out' and had their stuff franchised and milked to death. Selling out is hardly artistic unless it's some post modern irony for you. How can you say something is of high art and artistic value when there's barely anything to the film itself and the film relies more on marketing than the movie to keep it afloat?
Come on, man. You guys need to stop being so delusional, movies don't need to be high art to be enjoyable and loved and you don't have to justify liking movies in those regards.

And Godzilla sure as hell isn't shitty either, you know there's maybe less than 20 minutes of the actual monster in each almost 2 hour movie, right? The movies are about much more than Godzilla and have a lot of human characters and elements. The original was branded as a horror film, the monster was created from atomic bombs in WW2. Lol
Again, not exactly what I'd call 'high art', but defintely damn good for what it is.

It doesn't matter. Therein lies the artistic value.

Quote:

This is like when people say something has "bad acting" in it when there's minimal dialogue.

Could the problem be that's what you're reducing it to?

Other movies do not reduce the existence, impact, or bearing on a single movie. Once something is art it is art infinitely and what it does cannot be removed or altered. Movies and art don't exist in a vacuum. If you don't see any artistic merit in it any more because of some sort of utilitarian reductionism you wish to apply, that's what you bring to the table.

You talk about pretentious hipsters and "looking into things too deeply" and then say these things unironically. Lmao

BTW sorry to triple post but no one's saying everything has to be "high art"

Art can be funny, art can be simple, art can be crass, art can be one and done, art can be complicated, art can be annoying as hell, art is art and that's what makes it beautiful.

No matter how many sequels they want to make of Jurassic Park, no matter how many times Spielberg wants to plop his name on and "sell out" with them, has no bearing on the impact Jurassic Park made. That is unchangeable.

Sequels, and "selling out," only enhance the value of what came first. If sequels ruin an original, that's a feeling YOU bring to the table. If movies exist in a utilitarian vacuum to you, that's on you bubb. Meanwhile we'll hop around and call Robocop art because we see the art in it and if that bothers you go watch something and don't worry about it. lmao

Not lower on Amazon I guess

Criterion Flash sale has is 42.50 twice a year -- no tax for most people, plus the approx 10% reward certificate.

It's still a very good price on the set. Hopefully the packaging survives the packing and shipping. My outer box was ripped to shreds when I bought it from Criterion a few sales back, but they were nice enough to send a pristine replacement.
