Even the cheesy stuff like All Monsters Attack are fun to watch. My favorite sequel is Mothra vs Godzilla.

After Rushmore, his movies became very artificial and cringy. The dialogue is so robotic and only spoiled Upper East/West Side WASPs (no offense) could possibly relate to his characters. They’re nice to look at, but that’s it.

As a huge fan, my thoughts on this

1. Cult audience/Hardcore geek fan base, So intense reactions (think Star Wars, Marvel, Trek etc)

2. Godzilla has rarely gotten proper respect on home video. Scattered among often bad distributors, films going in and out of print, poor transfers. Dubtitles.....the list goes on.

3. General disrespect among snobbish types. This release is somewhat of a validation for people who think Toho and Ishiro Honda have been unfairly treated.

Something doesn't have to be relatable to be enjoyable or good.

There was that one time someone told me "you have no business liking Mulholland Drive because you have nothing to do with Hollywood, and that's why it's a bad movie."

Flashbacks, man! lmao

I’d like to see Amadeus get the Criterion treatment. And it’d be nice if they remembered John Woo

Also Ishiro Honda has to be the most prolific sci fi director of all time. His genre output is larger than most other directors entire career. I don’t know if there is an argument for him as a sci fi auteur along the lines of James Cameron, George Lucas, or the Wachowski’s, in that his large output was a result of him directing scripts in the studio system. But his sci fi was internationally recognised and he reshaped the genre for us successfully pathing the way for those other directors.

"Stay tuned for updates tomorrow."

That doesn't sound like the announcements are coming tomorrow.

That's true. Sounds like they don't even know when they'll announce.

You'd think they'd announce the rest now and save the mythical Spine 1000 for a special day.

That would make too much sense though.

Someone leaked the Godzilla titles on the website. Not a complete Godzilla set. Just the movies streaming on CC's service.

For a lot of us born in the 60's, these definitely have a nostalgia factor. My brother and I used to watch these films as kids and just laugh our asses off (especially All Monsters Attack or as we knew it, Godzilla's Revenge). My favorite of all time is War of the Gargantuas. I am trying not to get too excited because I don't really know if that and Rodan will be included (I sure hope if they aren't that Criterion will give them individual releases). I watched these films with my kids when they were growing up and have now introduced my grandkids to them. My oldest grandson is a Godzilla fanatic so I can't wait to watch these with him. These films have brought a lot of joy to multiple generations of families and to me there is nothing better than a film that I can sit down and enjoy with my grandkids....

I'm gonna tell myself the reason for this delay is they're doing a Kubrick box set and right now they're in a tug of war with Warner Bros over when they can announce it because they are releasing their own 4K scan of The Shining among others.

Tell yourself whatever you want. Just don’t lose your mind when it doesn’t happen.
