I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it depends on the rights they secure when they make a deal with the studio pertaining to a particular movie...DVD rights or BD rights may be seperate (maybe?)

I believe this was the case with the recent releases of films like Dillinger is Dead and Night Train to Munich, etc.

From Criterion's website...

Thanks for the quick responses! That's sort of what I was guessing, but just curious. I was watching Vampyr last night and thinking how great it would be in blu...which got me thinking about how great Passion of Joan of Arc would be in blu...

Have you seen "Vivre Sa Vie" on Blu-ray? The clip of "Passion of Joan of Arc" will really wet your proverbial whistle for a Blu-ray release.......

This title is rumored to be on blu-ray from Criterion at some point.

This is correct, as well. Another recent DVD-only release was the "3 Silent Classics By Josef Von Sternberg," which was licensed from Paramount before blu-ray was a deciding factor for Criterion. So, that gives you an idea of how long Criterion was sitting on it before finally being able to find the time to release it. Criterion would've had to gone back to Paramount and re-negotiate their contract if they wanted to release it on blu-ray.

I bet they would do a great job with the soundtrack (really wish I could have gone to one of the showings with the live musicians), and the print looks great on DVD, so I imagine the blu would look stellar. Glad to hear this is in the rumor mills.

According to The Criterion Cast...

Five More MGM Films Likely To Find A Home In The Criterion Collection.

- The French Lieutenant's Woman
- King Of Hearts
- La Cage Aux Follies
- My Beautiful Laundrette
- How I Won The War

This is all speculation on their part, of course.

those are, of course, some fine movies, but wow, I can name 5 MGM titles in 5 seconds that would be better choices--

Moby Dick (John Huston)
West Side Story (Robert Wise)
The Manchurian Candidate (John Frankenheimer)
Kiss Me Deadly (Robert Aldrich)
The Defiant Ones (Stanley Kramer)

Now this would be a great Criterion re-release since the DVD version is just too expensive since its OOP. When it comes to the releases that some of you mentioned, I just hope there are a good number of special features they can find.

"Paths of Glory", they really went out and did the research to find that old '70s TV interview with Douglas and also that short news footage on the original soldiers. That was very thorough research in trying to find those and getting the rights to them.

If Criterion were to pick up a Lester film, I would've expected that it would be The Knack

I see.
well that list you included certainly contains a lot of the best stuff.
It would take me a while to go through and find 5 new titles that would be available.
maybe the other stuff will be available one day.

Dude, they are ridiculous. I'm getting a$$-raped by the whole lot of them. Of course I'm having a blast, though.

I am extremely bored at work today.
