One of the best living American filmmakers, whose films are, yes, largely quiet affairs with not much in the way of gore, superheroes, or explosions and so may be characterized as films where "nothing happens."

Her most-recent film, Certain Women, is already in the Criterion collection, and in some ways its her most accessible, given that it stars three of the best living English-speaking actresses in three very loosely-related shorts, but I think it's probably easier to get a handle on what makes Reichardt special by starting with Old Joy or Wendy and Lucy. Or if Westerns are your thing, Meek's Cutoff is a fantastic revisionist western where indeed not much happens, and that's largely the point.

This is a good candidate for a box set with Wendy and Lucy and Meeks Cutoff.
Both are on loan from Oscilloscope, who put out very well-packaged Blu-Rays for them. Not a chance they're coming from Criterion.

Old Joy in and of itself is exciting news!

I LOVE Kelly Reichardt and I've seen all of her films, though Old Joy is probably my least favorite of the bunch, unfortunately. Only saw it the one time, and since I like or love every other film she's made, I think it's due for a second chance, so this is pretty cool news.

Already have the great Oop UK boxset of Reinhardt’s films, plus own the Rivers of Grass, Night Moves, and Certain Women. Wouldn’t spring for a new boxset unless there were some great new extras. Wendy and Lucy still devastating to watch. One of if not the best movie of the 00’s.

At 75 minutes, Old Joy is barely feature length. like someone else said it would be cool to have a box set. Does criterion have a relationship with Oscilloscope beyond the criterion channel?

I appreciate Reinhardt, but have no interest in buying that one. Plenty of other older films that could use new prints or a first time home video release.

75 minutes wouldn't even be the shortest film they've released this year. My hope would be that they include her short films.

They recently released Detour, which is 69 mins. Length is a non-issue, and I'm certain it'll have lots of extras anyway.

That’s a good length. People get weird if movies are less than 90 minutes. I wish more movies were around 80 minutes.

Did I miss any news or have they not released the title for the Spine 1000?

The Inland Sea is 56 minutes long and it's getting it's own individual release.

The Kid is only 53 minutes(originally 68 but cut by Chaplin to 53 in its re-release) and its fine and well worth the price. Also well stacked with extras. Length isn't an issue.

Night and Fog, for what it's worth, is 33 minutes. I think it wins for shortest.

I was going to say La Jetée before I looked it up and was reminded they paired it with Sans Soleil on disc.

Agreed. Besides, Old Joy is by far my least favorite of hers that I've seen. (Haven't caught Certain Women yet.)

As a proud Circle of Trust member (three years strong), I would've liked to see Oscilloscope upgrade Old Joy (assuming it would be a big mover for them).

I love what they do.

No doubt I'll be proved horribly wrong but I'm calling this Kubrick set as Criterion spine 1000; simply because it's being announced at 10.00 BST.

I think it's a joint WB/Criterion set with Criterion releasing in North America and WB distributing in the rest of the world.

I dearly wish it would be a 4k release for all his WB films but I find it hard to believe, given that Leon Vitali said the 4ks are yet to be done for FMJ and EWS. Unless, that is, they've got "a big surprise" coming to us.

I think we'll see new extras, probably including "Film-worker" and maybe "My Life with Stanley", and a big book like the one in the Bergman set. I wouldn't be surprised, in fact, if it came packaged with the official exhibition book which is really nice and costs about £40 (though I'd be a bit pissed off that I bought it already).

Anyway, see you in ten hours or so when I shall be forced to eat "le pie 'umble".

It does all seem like too much of a coincidence... not long ‘til we find out.
