With Cold War being an Amazon movie is there a chance that Criterion would release Suspiria (2018).

Studio Canal have the international rights I think. Kino Lorber probably had the option to release it stateside with their deal with Studio Canal, but ultimately passed due to the poor transfer.

But that is the North American Blu-ray debut of Cold War.

Suspiria has been out on Blu-ray by Lionsgate since January.

Cold War would have been an ideal title to be Criterion's first 4K UHD release. If the rumours prove to be true and they release Roma on 4K UHD before the end of the year, I hope they belatedly announce one for Cold War as well.

I really believe that we're going to see Criterion push out as many Fox releases as possible to get them in the collection while they have the opportunity, double-dips be damned. I can't imagine that Disney is going to let the relationship that Fox had with Criterion continue.

I think in Criterion's case the relationship will continue as they have relationships with Disney as they released Rebecca and Notorious through them. It's not like there a smaller boutique label.

Also some of Wes Anderson’s films.

I think Anderson is a special case, but both of you have good points.

Still, the situation does seem kind of fluid. They recently extended to Fox's library their longstanding strict limits on how their older films films can be screened in theaters. (No older films in a theater that shows first-run films, for instance.) And we don't know if they're going to treat their library as a more valuable commodity reserved for Disney+. A lot of unanswered questions right now, and I wouldn't blame Criterion for deciding there was gonna be a change in policy and they needed to rush some projects.

In a perfect world we'd have the ultimate video distributor, even better than Criterion, where every major movie and indie film and foreign film would be given a 4k upgrade and released all at once (maybe thousands of titles). Sure, you might have to recruit some child slave labor and put your factory in China or India somewhere (hopefully not as bad as the Temple of Doom), but that would be a perfect scenario (minus the ethical and humanitarian issues).

Until that happens (and I guarantee it will never happen), double dipping to me should be a PERSONAL choice. It's all about the collector, and these companies need their loyal consumers. Criterion is analogous to a mother bird that brings back a worm to the nest every now and then to feed her hungry baby birds. The baby birds are us, and we're ALWAYS hungry for more food (ie. more releases), but we're always going to be in a perpetual "hunger state", because we're only getting 5 titles a month. Some will be upgrades and that's exciting. I think "to each their own" if consumers wish to upgrade or double dip. They're not hurting anyone (aside from the environment with all the plastic being produced from big oil), and they're the reason the company is still in business.

Are a lot of people here holding off on buying Criterion releases because you think Criterion will get into 4K and release them all again in that format soon?

I don't think so. Plenty of comments from those who want Criterion to go down that path, but I can't recall anyone making a big deal about not picking up titles until/unless it happens.

Definitely see these "all or nothing" sentiments elsewhere on the site, but I suppose as Criterion has yet to release a single UHD title, people are more measured.

I also think a lot of us have had enough of upgrading across formats over the years, and if we pick up a UHD title at all, it will be a release we don't already have.

I’ve seen quite a few people say they wouldn’t buy movies until Criterion goes 4K.

Can't say I've read as much here, but as I don't look at every post every day I'm happy to stand corrected.

More fool them if that's the case. People are swearing off perfectly good BD releases all over this site because they expect/demand UHD releases that may never arrive. Don't understand it myself.

Especially since Criterion still mostly sells DVDs. Producing releases for a (supposedly very loud) minority wouldn't make any business sense. Not sure why people are still unwilling to accept that.

I can’t say what others are doing, but most of my Criterion BD’s will be my last stop. If they start offering unreleased editions in 4K, I’ll likely get those. And I have no doubt I will always upgrade to superior editions of films from a small group of my favorite directors. But I’m not holding out for anything from them.

THIS. I'll double dip for blu ray but that is it. The pictures good enough for me on blu-ray. I have no plans to buy a UHD player anytime soon. My interest is in older movies anyway and let's face it, any old movie released properly on blu-ray looks better than it did when it was released in theaters back in the day.

Definitely NOT. Personally, I couldn't care less about UHD, but I do wish a lot better announcements from Criterion in near future.

Could be simply because, although this site continues to attract a more reasonable exchange of opinion than most, it's still the internet? And there's still going to be the odd poster who, when denied instant self-gratification, will take a pouty 'taking my toys and going home' approach to it all? No slam against UHV/4K enthusiasts or supporters who are legitimately interested in getting the best-looking product available, just against the whining, demanding, and sense of self-entitlement on the part of some others. And yes, format fatigue is a real thing, particularly for those of us who are a little older.
