Admittedly, I can get almost every Criterion release from my local library. But the Criterion Channel is so much more convenient.
I’m on the 99 dollar a year plan but would pay more if it went up. You’re right, though. At least for me it’s a great way to sift through movies I appreciate and movies I would like to buy so I don’t end up like that user a few pages back who spent upwards to $40 for that War And Peace disc and not really care for it(lol). It’s currently on the channel.

Yeah the Channel is great, but on Roku devices, there's been a confirmed issue when you stop and re-start a film later, or fast forward, that causes the subtitles to go out of synch. They are working on the fix now. Otherwise, it's a great channel.

I've gone ahead and done some tests on the films you reported as well as a couple of other ones and did find that when you fast forward, the subtitles on videos do tend to go out of sync about a couple of seconds. I've let our engineering team know and they will investigate to see what the issue might be and hopefully come up with a solution as soon as we can.

It seems possible that it'd be for the Channel's "Adventures In Moviegoing" series. They've had folks like Bill Hader on there, so Cattrall is not out of the question.

Looks like that might be the long rumored pre-code movie? The Story of Temple Drake was released 7 months before the Hays Code era started on July 1, 1934.

I'd love to see that one. I adore Miriam Hopkins.

That would be an answer to my prayers: the best movie ever made based on a Faulkner book/story by far. Better even than Intruder In the Dust and Tomorrow.

They also love DePalma and I thought there were rumors of this a while back coming out from CC. Who knows with CC most of the time, but it makes sense to me.

I think you’re right. That’s another Miriam Hopkins film; she’s already in the collection twice, with Design For Living, and the recently released The Heiress. Nice catch!

I’m all for films of the pre-code era, and should anybody from Criterion see this post, I’d pay a handsomely to add them to my library. Seeing the early films of Barbara Stanwyck, Una Merkel, Mae West, Joan Blondell, Joan Crawford, Myrna Loy, Norma Shearer, Greta Garbo, Carole Lombard et all is fascinating. I’ve a real soft spot, especially, for Stanwyck’s films from that period; Baby Face is high on my most wanted films list. The first time I saw it, even after reading about the lax censorship of the era, the overt sexuality of her character caught me by surprise. The period is infinitely fascinating to me with so many strong, well-written female characters.

It'd be cool if could include the remake Sanctuary with Temple Drake. That one is from Fox though (Temple from Paramount)

And also The Smiling Lieutenant and Trouble in Paradise on DVD. Would love for the either of those to get an upgrade.

Maybe Kim Cattrall was there to talk about Ticket to Heaven. Ebert gave it a big thumbs up.

Before I return to my movie, let me say how much I adore, and admire Sissy Spacek. She is unquestionably one of our greatest living actresses.

I wonder if Criterion would ever consider adding JFK to the Collection? It’s out of print in the U.S. Spacek’s performance as Jim Garrison’s wife is quite good, though her screen time is limited. But talk about a great cast, and one that could make for some fascinating Criterion exclusive interviews or commentaries-besides Sissy Spacek, there’s Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones, Joe Pesci, Gary Oldman, Jack Lemon, Walter Matthau, Kevin Bacon, Sally Kirkland, John Candy, Ed Asner, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lolita Davidovich, and Wayne Knight. Then there’s Donald Sutherland’s riveting monologue as Mister X.

I think this is a movie people still feel very strongly about; they either love it, as I do, or they hate it. The same can be said about Oliver Stone. It has to be one of the most polarizing films of the 90s, and would be a big earner for Criterion.

I remember being in Dealey Plaza when the film was being shot, and how eerie it felt. They had to restore the Texas School Book Depository to look as it did in 1963. I moved to Texas in 1989, but being in downtown Dallas that day, I felt like I’d stepped back in time. Though I’ve been to the Sixth Floor Museum several times, I don’t think the power of that area of the downtown will ever diminish, for me. The sense of history, and tragedy, just looms like a fog that never dissipates. To talk to people who were born and raised in Dallas, it’s evident that the city still feels shame nearly 56 years later.

I'd be all over any blu-ray release, from Criterion or otherwise, that contains the original theatrical cut of JFK.

Amazing film. Even if you disagree with Stone's politics or the conspiracy theory, it's an absolutely gripping movie, the first 3 hour film I ever saw that seemed to fly by in an hour.

And yes, Sissy Spacek is a fantastic actress. I recently saw her in The Old Man & The Gun... great little flick.

Me, too. Wikipedia states that the theatrical cut has been released on BD "internationally" - but without specifics. I understand this is incorrect, and it never has been in any country.

That may be more possible than you realize. When Fox purchased the remake rights from Paramount, it also acquired the rights to the 1933 film. So, both films are under the same Fox/Disney banner. It wouldn't be any different than Criterion acquiring both versions of "The Magnificent Obsession." Whether it happens or not I have no clue.
