I don't think that these distinctions are always black and white.
There's also examples like Roger Donaldson's The Getaway. That film uses the same Walter Hill screenplay as the Sam Peckinpah film. That script was based on a Jim Thompson novel though Hill throws away large chunks of the book and the plotlines of the two films match each other, so to say that Donaldson's film is a "re-adaptation" of Thompson's book would be a bit off base.

There's still a difference between remaking a movie and re-adapting source material.
I bring up Psycho again; that's a remake of Hitchcock's film, it didn't re-adapt the novel.

I would say having another go at the same script is remake territory though.

BTW The Ring is a remake too and not a re-adaptation. It's also a good remake.

But are those newly split hairs remakes of one another, or re-adaptations?

The real question is whether those split hairs are rebooted into wigs or toupees.

They’re a hair plug, so not from the original source, but might be just as good as the original.

Rather then splitting hairs let me completely hijack the discussion and suggest Criterion release some Hideo Gosha films like:

Goyokin
Hitokiri
Sword of the Beast

and another Kobayashi film I really want in HD:
Samurai Rebellion

Really feel like Criterion hasn't been releasing a lot of Japanese films lately and I need my Samurai fix in HD. Not to mention I find it strange that Dreams was the last Kurosawa film to be released 3 years ago.

Am I wrong here? I mean I appreciate the Mizoguchi films and would definitely like to see more of those plus the Ozu films, but where's Stray Dog, Drunken Angel, Red Beard, The Bad Sleep Well etc. I know Red beard had a restoration, as it ran the film circuit afterwards and Mosfilm restored Dersu Uzala. Is this another case of Studio canal owning the rights and wanting too high a price for rights?

and completely out of left field here, but who in the world has the rights to Arsenic and Old Lace WB? I'm asking the HD gods to please hear my cries!

Yeah I've really been clamoring for a Blu-ray set of these, similar to the DVD one that Criterion released years ago.

I wouldn't mind an upgrade of Samurai Spy as well. It is the only ninja film in the collection. And I love it if they would also get the rights and release a box-set of the Shinobi no Mono films. It would sit comfortably side by side with Criterion's release of Zatoichi, Lady Snowblood, and Lone Wolf & Cub. The world needs more B&W ninja action in HD!

As pointed out at the Criterion Forum, there was a 5 year gap between new a new Bergman release (Persona in 2014 and Shame in 2019)and 3 years between upgrades (Cries and Whispers in 2015 and Virgin Spring in 2018) before/just after the box set.

So, maybe some sort of Kurosawa set is on the deck if they can get a quality master for Dersu Uzala (Lee Kline mentioned they were having issues finding suitable materials for this in the HTF podcast), but with a Fellini set happening next year and some sort of Varda set also in the works (not to mention the possibility that they will still issue a complete Kiarostami set,) I'm not expecting one.

House was a pretty big hit for Criterion, so I don't know why they haven't gone after more of Nobuhiko Obayashi's films. Or, at the very least, released the other one they've already got : Sada.

I wonder if they might also include the 1930 version of Holiday as an extra.

That first film Shinobi no Mono blew me away when I saw it. Would look amazing in HD given the use of darkness and shadows in the film. They are so different then the typical samurai films of that period, but as with most long going series the later films suffered in quality IMO. Still worth watching though.

I repeat I would like some BD upgrades of those. Been tempted by this set and wonder if I should just go ahead and get the DVD set instead of waiting for a BluRay upgrade

I would love a Kurosawa set, but given that were probably getting a Fellini boxset next year and that WKW set is probably coming out next year, I say the odds of a Kurosawa set aren't high. Though, Criterion could at the least give us some individual Kurosawa's like Dersu Uzala, Red Beard, The Bad Sleep Well, and Stray Dog.

I'm almost certain Arsenic and Old Lace is WB and its sad that it hasn't been given the Criterion treatment. Also, wish I Was A Fugitive From a Chain Gang would get the Big C treatment.

It's a great set, but as soon as you buy it Criterion will announce a Bluray upgrade. So I say buy it now! Take one for the team.

If I had the cash, I would gladly pick it up. Maybe a sales buy. Next month, most of my available budget is going to the Godzilla set.

I just checked and it looks like they are going to be releasing the first Shinobi no Mono film on Blu-ray next week in Japan: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Shino...lu-ray/247356/
