Thanks for that. Kind of explains why this hasn't happened yet. However, the comments make it seem like the version on the Criterion Channel looks HD, but who knows.

Hard to argue against that, Ray.

My favourite, though, is probably The Long Good Friday - when Bob Hoskins' character realizes his fate.

Yesssss

I forgot that. I'm changing my vote. That ending was hypnotizing. Great great movie Long Good Friday.

Plenty of great ones mentioned already, but I tip my hat to the final scene in Imitation of Life. Pure Douglas Sirk. And not only the final scene of the movie, but also of his career. Not many get to exit stage right at the top of their game. Sirk did.

Heard about Robert Forster’s passing. Shame, super talented! Criterion related, he starred in Haskell Wexler’s Medium Cool.

RIP. “Medium Cool” is an excellent film, one of the more underrated in the collection imo, I was lucky to catch a 35mm presentation earlier in the summer (as apart of a Verna Bloom tribute).

Most pulverizing final shot: The Breaking Point (and it's a Criterion release!)

A more contemporary choice, but the final shots of Lost In Translation make me well up everytime. That final scene is my favorite movie moment ever. There isn't a song I've ever heard that plays as beautifully as Just Like Honey by the Jesus and Mary Chain in that moment.

Sofia Coppola is great at movie endings. The Beguiled is a good movie with an AMAZING final shot.

Nothing gives those final-seconds-gut-punches like old noir, and the first I always think of is The Killing.

When they run their sales, does Amazon price match?

One that I like; that isn't discussed much, is The People Against O'Hara. William Schallert's closing line is as ice cold as they get.

Saw there was a $5.44 coupon for John Ford's Stagecoach blu on Amazon going for $24.90 (net $19.46), so finally picked up this title, which I've never seen. (Wonder why the quotation marks on the cover art.) Also picked up Michael Clayton for $9.45.

No, not across the board. Amazon always has Criterion titles priced around the $22-23 mark, and occasionally at or even below $20 (the 50% off price point for a "standard" Criterion releases). Right now there is a coupon promotion on certain titles that approximates a 50% sale (see example in the post by a priori above).

I do like Michael Clayton. For me, Clooney's best, along with The American.

No idea about the quotations, though.

Does anyone think there's a chance of Lean's Hobson's Choice getting an upgrade? I'm thinking of picking up the DVD during the sale.

Another Criterion release with a great final shot is Ace in the Hole, and also the iconic ending of The Graduate. I’m sure I could think of others. I love it when movies end with a final image that sticks with you. Most films end with some kind of denouement that wraps up the story but lessens the final impact.

It's an SC title. The UK release is very nice, but is region-locked.

KL picked up a ton of SC titles this year, but I don't recall if this is one of them.

The Criterion DVD looks great, so it may be your best bet for now if you're not region free.
