Trying to avoid inadvertently seeing spoilers in the discussion about final scenes and last lines, so I don't know if this one has been mentioned already, but I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG contains an extremely brutal end scene and tragic last line. You'll never forget it.

What about special sales? Like BF, Labor Day, etc.

I was hoping when they run a 40-50% off sale that Amazon would price match the Godzilla set.

Amazon has done major discounts (60% off) of large boxed sets in the past on Prime Day. They don’t tend to price match Criterion flash sales or B&N sales.

The next B&N 50% event should start just a few days after that set is released. If your preference is to buy from Amazon but you might have to wait. Amazon did eventually discount the Bergman set by 50%, but if I remember right is was about six months after the release.

So far, an all-French weekend: two murder mysteries (Maigret Sets a Trap, Maigret and the St. Fiacre Case), and, well....a bit of a mystery (Cleo from 5 to 7). Varda clearly has a lot to say in this movie, but I'm not quite getting it; definitely goes right back in the 'to-watch pile.' Really gorgeous looking film, though. Tonight, for a change of pace, The Slumber Party Massacre.

I just finished Magnificent Obsession. Add that one to my Flash Sale buy list. Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson shine together, both in it, and All That Heaven Allows. I may just grab them both. I’ve never been too big on melodrama, because it’s just too easy to go off the rails with overly-saccharine sentimentality. However, as it turns out, I am a fan of well-done melodrama.

As previously alluded to in our discussion, Douglas Sirk was a master. I am in complete agreement after only two films. Now, I have to order the Universal blu set of Imitation of Life.

I'm on the same page as you. I was recently put on to Sirk and I'm loving everything I've seen. I'm ordering both Magnificent Obsession and All That Heaven Allows at the flash sale and I have the Universal blu of IOL on my list now too. I'm hoping the sale is this Tuesday!

The July sale (can't remember the last NOV) Amazon did mostly match B&N prices+Shipping so for the 19.99 prices Amazon set most of theirs to 22.99 -- I guess they don't think B&N customers shop in store or are smart enough to order 2 items. For the 35+ sets it was exact.

Criterions are hit or miss whether they are allowed in B&N 40% sales

Ok, David Cronenberg fans, sell me on his films with Criterion. If you didn’t have any of them, and had to pick only one this Flash sale, which would you choose, and what would be the thinking behind your choice?

The three film of his that I’ve seen were riveting: Crash, A History of Violence, and Eastern Promises. Should Criterion get rights to Crash, I’d jump at the chance to own the blu-Ray. The last two I own on DVD, and will upgrade. I like that he’s a risk taker, unafraid to examine the darker side of humanity; his camera doesn’t flinch when showing things that might make a good portion of his viewing audience uncomfortable.

I have The Fly arriving tomorrow from Amazon. What should be my next selection: The Brood, Scanners, Videodrome or Naked Lunch?

Thank you in advance.

Videodrome followed by Scanners. I wasn't a fan of The Brood, and Naked Lunch I didn't even understand lol.

I would go for Videodrome and Scanners. I have a soft spot for Scanners, it was my first Cronenberg I watched when it came out and blew my mind (Ill get my coat).

I think Videodrome is a better film, but Scanners is more then just lol exploding heads.

and oh get Dead Ringers, Jeremy Iron's performance in it is amazing.

Videodrome and Naked Lunch are my favorites! I’d say try Videodrome over Naked Lunch unless you’re a big Burroughs fan. I’m personally not the biggest Brood fan, I think it’s good, but I would put Scanners above that one.

I love it, but I’ve seen enough people not like it, so I don’t recommend it, unless they are really into Cronenberg or Burroughs!

KL plans to release Taza Son of Cochise 3-D (Universal 1954) early next year. Be sure
to give it a chance. It's deep Sirk, full of anguish and regret and hard choices. It's his
only western, but he invests the same meticulous care in design and color that he gave
to his melodramas. The stereoscopic photography is state-of-the-art and more
sophisticated than most 3-D films.

[Show spoiler]But you must, Jim. How do you live? "I steal"
. Was just watching this on TCM as Paul Muni is their Star of the Month, and they were showing this film. My guess is that the film elements need work to bring up to BluRay standards
