The reason I'm not a fan is that the films are devoid of any joy. There's no happiness. And the plight of the young child, Daigoro, is truly saddening.

Zatoichi on the other hand is wonderful. I also love Yojimbo/Sanjuro. I'd strongly recommend The Samurai Trilogy and, of course, Seven Samurai. Seven Samurai, IMO, is the best film ever made.
Heh...I just noticed the license plate in your avatar. Nice! Thanks for the recommendations. I have Seven Samurai and while I don't consider it the best film ever made, it's definitely near the top. I've only watched it once, on DVD. I just recently upgraded to Blu-ray so I need to watch it again soon.

Whoever gave Zatoichi a driver's license sure has a sense of humor!

All very good or great films, to be sure, but I don't understand the connection that is trying to be made.
2001 is the God.
Barry Lyndon is The Father.
The Shining is The Holy Ghost.

Can I ask how 2001 and Stalker are similar in your opinion?

Anyone here big Guy Maddin fans?

He was in my city last night introducing his recent experimental film The Green Fog at the opening night of the Three Rivers Film Festival. I didn't get a chance to make it down to the little neighborhood theater but I remember seeing My Winnipeg there many years ago.

I actually think that Stalker has more in common with The Wizard of Oz.

I can't say I've seen all of his films but I try to watch My Winnipeg at some point during the coldest, darkest winter months.

I come away with a different experience almost every time after watching this film.
One of my favourite films I can certainly say!

Have you seen Usagi Yojimbo's Zato-ino? A blind pig who uses his smell senses to fight, but then it gets cut off by Usagi & he has to replace it with a wooden one

I don't know if I'd call myself a "big" Guy Maddin fan. I've liked the films of his that I've seen (Careful, Tales from the Gimli Hospital, Twilight of the Ice Nymphs, and Archangel), though it's been quite a while since I've seen them. They are all, however, very much off the beaten path, and not for everyone. I have a couple of other films of his on BD (The Forbidden Room and Keyhole) that I need to get around to watching.

Is Near Dark on Criterion's channel a new transfer or the old one from 10 years ago?
