Not yet! I plan on getting the Eureka reissue in the near future.

This is something the wife and I have been considering since we're both getting older and recently became grandparents. Everytime I start thinking about all the work and hassle involved in a major move, I just start to

I would like to do that, but shelf space is at a premium right now. I could box up all my DVDs, since I really don't watch them, but then I would have a ton of empty space and I like seeing the shelves full. Damned if I do. Damned if I don't.

The layout of the series inserts and booklets are amazing, as well as the great distinctive clear cases. I really love these releases when they do films that I love.. honestly wish Sony, MGM, Warner, Disney, and the like had put enough thought into company wide Layouts for all releases so they would look especially gorgeous on the shelf. When I buy an older film, I always look to see if a Criterion edition is available first.

OK, I think I'm done with my B&N Criterion 50% sale this year. This is what I got:

[Show spoiler]

I was mostly on a Samurai kick but I snuck another in there. Thanks for the suggestions!

The Samurai Trilogy is very good, enjoyed it as a blind buy. Want to get the Lone Wolf & Cub series too, but that will wait until the next flash sale since there some other titles I want to get during this sale.

I'm not a big fan of the Samurai films, for some reason. I do like the Japanese ghost stories though so I'll probably get this when I go shopping later this month:

I wish an upgrade of Onibaba was available from them.

Just seen A Hidden Life & while quintessentially a Malick film, it's a harder watch than his others

Hopefully Criterion will bring out a release in half a year & quicker than they did with The Tree of Life

If I told you how badly I want to see that film, it would probably get me into trouble around here.

Kuroneko is great--gorgeous B&W photography, super atmospheric and weird. I am not a samurai fan either, but I am game for anything ghost-related. I picked it up from Barnes & Noble several years ago as a blind-buy, and loved it.

There was a security guard at the bottlm with night vision glasses making sure that no one was filming it - same with The Lighthouse the day before & I imagine Jojo Rabbit tomorrow

Fox searchlight right? We’re definitely getting a standard bluray first

For the past month I have managed to have my day off during the week. I do chores and errands, but manage to rewatch some of my favorite movies. So far I have seen:
High and Low
Throne of Blood
The Samurai Trilogy
Hidden Fortress
Rashomon
Amarcord
For All Mankind
La Grande Illusion
The Royal Tenenbaums
Life Aquatic
For All Mankind

Next up, want to check out:
The Bad Sleep Well (haven’t watched in over 10 years)
The Life of Oharu
Speedy
Elevator to the Gallows (over 10 years also, borrowed from my local library)

The Life of Oharu is an utterly brilliant film.

But also a bit of a downer.

...I self-medicated with large quantities of Jack Daniels and raw morphine after seeing it for the first time.

Oh Ray. Your reactions to movies are always very strong. It shows the passion you have.

I understand Oharu is a downer, but I just love Mizoguchi. I shall prepare mentally for my first viewing.

I also see you have Kwaidan. Was just going to recommend it. How about The Phantom Carriage and Ugetsu for ghost stories?

Onibaba was one of my first Criterion’s. There are a good amount of people who like the film, but it doesn’t get much attention or talk. I actually got carded when I went to buy it. After watching it, I understood why.

Slightly surprised that never got an upgrade to Blu-ray. I'm even more surprised that the Human Condition trilogy hasn't either.

It got me when they did Naked Island before upgrading Onibaba. It was great they made it, but felt they were sending a signal they weren’t interested in Onibaba. So far, this proves true.

I was surprised by something regarding The Human Condition yesterday, too - that a brand new copy of the Arrow region B release can be had for under $15 on eBay. There's no review on this site, but the Beaver raved about the release and the PQ. Probably worth picking up for those who have all region players.
