You don't have to personally like samurai to think Hari-kari is one of the best films ever

I went back to Barnes & Noble and purchased...

Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
Local Hero

Also... I double-dipped and bought normal Scanavo case editions of Foreign Correspondent and Tess.

One of these days I will come to understand Asian film. Or, rather, East Asian film. I've had no problem with Iranian cinema, for instance. Of course, I'm half-Lebanese, so maybe there's that? I don't know. But I've always had a hard time with Chinese/Japanese/other East Asian cinemas. It just doesn't connect ... and I don't understand why.

I'm starting to think that it has to do with acting style. I honestly have no idea.

Anyone interested in Go Kato? I got interested in him 15 years ago or more. He is a great actor, but it seems like he almost never gets a staring role. I don’t know of many blu rays, or criterion titles.

I do have Samurai Rebellion. Anyone have any recommendations for Go Kato films?

Start with Kurosawa. He has a lot of western influence. Hidden Fortress was hugely influential to George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola. Also, maybe not a samurai film like High and Low or The Bad Sleep Well.

Check local libraries for whatever they have.

If you can’t find anything you like, maybe it’s just not for you. I don’t like some directors like Jean-Luc Goddard that are considered one of the best. I watched Breathless a few times over the years, and just don’t like it. It is what it is.

Sword of the Beast for sure. He has a small, but memorable role in one of the Lone Wolf and Cub films. Not a major part, but he's also in Bandits Vs Samurai Squadron which needs a Blu-ray from Criterion fast.

Well what does everything predict for the announcements Friday? I guess Bamboozled is a certainty. Maybe Prince of Tides for February since it’s a Drama/Romance? What I really want though is new Fellini or Fellini upgrade (even if there is a possibility of a box set)

They hinted at Come and See on social media last week. So I’m really hoping that it finally happens.

Man, Hideo Gosha needs some love from someone. Criterion gave us a bare bones Three Outlaw Samurai on Blu and that’s it. Bandits would be cool, and I would love Goyokin to come out. Also, Sword of the Beast would be amazing, especially if it was in the Rebel Samurai package.

I bought the Olympics box set during the B&N sale and am blown away so far with the restoration with the first one. I can't wait to see all the other films in the set. The book that comes with it is just as impressive.

I think I saw it a couple of times on TCM but it's been at least 3-4 years ago. It's not that I dislike them but more like they generally don't click with me, if that makes sense. The Seven Samurai I love but others have left me feeling just so-so. Maybe if I understood the history and nuances of the Samurai I'd be more receptive. I don't know.

Onibaba was one of my first Criterion’s. There are a good amount of people who like the film, but it doesn’t get much attention or talk. I actually got carded when I went to buy it. After watching it, I understood why.
Something I like in Onibaba is the landscape. The reeds and their movements are hypnotic. It's almost like they are witnesses (or even accomplices) to the crimes. Or maybe I'm just letting my imagination go a little but I do love when a film pulls me in that much.

I have seen the two other ghost stories you mentioned but like my answer above to theEXORCIST it's been several years since I had access to TCM and I haven't been able to revisit them since.

I have a DVD-R copy of Minnie & Moskowitz I copied from the DVD at my University library many years back that I’d love throw away

Wow, can't thank you enough for this alert, man! Couldn't believe it was still available. Too bad the stereo tracks are missing, but for $14.83 shipped, the opportunity of seeing these in HD is fantastic.

The seller, Rarewaves, still has one available at the same price as of this posting. They are a very good seller and usually have the best deals on UK imports, but it's hard to keep up with their listings on eBay as they sell so much and eBay's search refinements are no where near as extensive as other sites.
