The thread is over 9,000... pages long. It didn't get that way purely on the discussions of Criterion titles.

But that includes about 6,000 pages of posts from Chuck Norris. They were all off topic, but no one had the guts to tell him.

Killing bad people and answering to those calling for Buddha to end their time on earth. Meanwhile he cowers in the face of the divine and good like Mifune's character.

I also find it fitting the character that is trained to defeat him never gets a chance. Just like in real life, unlike the movies, not everything lines up perfectly and strands are left dangling.

When the main character finally rebels at the end. Thrown into a violent rage against his predetermined destiny that forces his hand. The film comes to an abrupt ending at his death. The last moment of consciousness freeze framed in his mind and on film for a split second. The fact that fate itself stepped in to make this the ending of a film, that was suppose to be a trilogy, appears to be the universe or even something higher fulfilling the destiny of this movie as a stand alone masterpiece IMO. What could be more fitting.
What about the young samurai student who was training to beat Tatsuya Nakadai?

He just
[Show spoiler]disappears at the end, with no explanation or resolution whatsoever. I also thought it was disappointing that they teased a fight between Nakadai and Toshiro Mifune and we got nothing.

If you want some S&M action, just watch The Night Porter.
If it makes you feel any better, i watched Night on Earth last night and really liked it.

Might be my second favorite Jarmusch picture.

Winona Ryder was so cute back then.

...me likey.

Okay Professor, fair enough. Who do you think is going to pick up the U.S. blu-ray rights to the fantastic Rialto 4K restoration of Delon's best film Mr. Klein? The print showing in L.A. late October was immaculate. And yes, as good as Rocco, The Leopard, and Le Samourai are... I prefer Monsieur Klein.

As yet no blu-ray announcement. Criterion? Kino Lorber? Indicator?

So Mr. Klein has been restored in 4K? Good news. That film blew my mind.
I remember going back to watch it repeatedly. The DVD was okay, but ....

Long overdue on blu-ray. I hope Criterion gets it and releases it shortly.

[Show spoiler]I find it a little difficult to think of the ending as his death, given that he doesn't die at that point in the book or other film adaptations ( and knowing that they planned a sequel ).

I don't see why it couldn't. That's about 10 pages per title. And even less when you consider the Bergman and Godzilla sets...

[Show spoiler]Gojira tai Ingmar and its sequel, Bergman's Revenge

But there isn't going to be a sequel. What was planned and what ended up on film and in our hands are two different things. That was kind of the point of my post. I was taking the film as its own thing as it exists now. Its a amazing film that touches on the idea that ones path is predetermined and unavoidable. I think the idea that circumstances ended the film that way is marvelous as it fits in with that theme and allows the film to stand alone. Instead just being a film that has no ending and never will. People are allowed to interpret films any way they wish which is the very foundation of art. By divorcing the end product from its creators original intent and letting the work speak for itself its a much more complete, even profound, film. One might say the film was always going to end this way as it was predetermined to be.

The ending as it exists now leaves one to fill in the blanks. Which I find a much more satisfying ending. Its not unlike the serials it is based on where the author died before completing it.

Watching the Bond film LICENCE TO KILL one night a whole group of people came in 30 minutes into it, sat a few rows behind me and were laughing and talking as loud as they could, disrupting the entire theater. I got up and went over to their row and told them all to shut the eff up. One guy stood up and said, threateningly, "What did you say?" I told him once again to shut the eff up and that I was an off duty cop and if he started anything with me I'd have his ass in County before the next scene in the movie was over. He backed down and the whole group stayed quiet for the rest of the movie. Good thing he didn't know I wasn't a cop.

But the worst time was at the theater at UCLA, of all places, on opening night of a Murnau fest, of all things. The movie was FAUST and this guy sitting behind me was talking a mile a minute before the movie started, which is his right, but once the movie started he began to laugh throughout the entire film. Murnau's FAUST is hardly a comedy so after awhile I get really angry, turned and told him to shut up. He gave me the finger so I got up, pulled him out of his seat and decked him. He fell over and said, "Ok, man, I'll be quiet. Sorry." But I felt terrible so I just left the theater and I've regretted the incident ever since.

As Clint says in UNFORGIVEN, "I'm not like that anymore." I've definitely mellowed in my old age and good thing too because if I tried something like that nowadays, I shudder to think what would happen. As my buddy Ray Jackson posted above, it's way too risky. I'll watch my superb Blu of FAUST at home, thank you very much.
Wow, thanks for sharing that story... no doubt I would be careful these days too. People are just cracked up! Criterion fans or not, be on guard!

Happy to hear you enjoyed the movie too. I told you, jw007 knows what you like! He's got great taste in cinema (and just about everything for that matter). And yeah, Winona was such a hottie then (and still is today).

Or maybe the Educated Conjecture Thread considering the well-known and close relationship Criterion has with Rialto... and the fact that Criterion has released three auteurist films Delon has starred in (Rocky, Leo and Sam)... and that Losey is perhaps under-represented in "the Collection".

So not so much of a wish as perhaps something else. But hey... thanks for the advice!

Nearly every featured film Rialto has on their site is coming from Kino. You can ask the insider in the Kino thread if they have it. If he says it's with another label, then it's almost certainly with Criterion.
