Even though by my 21st century jaded eyes I can't recall any special effects that stood out. Brief Encounter and Happy Breed I found to be the best in the set.
I saw the live play of Blithe Spirit in a theater in-the-round in Traverse City, MI once, with Eva Gabor in the lead role (around 1980?). She would woosh by us running up and down the aisles making her entrances and exits. Sitting right on the aisle I could easily smell her perfume, and it was a great addition to the effect. It was a great experience, and I've liked the story ever since. I thought the film version was very good, coming at it as a play.

The Grate S Cape

I’m curious as to how Criterion will be able to improve on the existing Blu-ray, given the source material.

We've been seeing this a lot lately. I personally would rather have Criterion skip movies that are already available on Blu-Ray. At the same time, perhaps doing so is more profitable for them, which allows them to work on other projects.

Doesn’t the existing blu ray have video issues?

I've typically taken this line (see me outrage with All About Eve), but I fully endorse this practice if the original release leaves a lot to be desired.

Hopefully Criterion can improve on the previous edition.

Yes. This should represent a significant upgrade.

Yeah.

*sigh*

I love The Great Escape and on UHD, it would be an immediate buy for me. I already have a mighty-fine Blu-ray of it, though. Failing the obvious UHD route that Criterion needs to embark upon yesterday, I really wish they'd focus on stuff that's not already on Blu-ray... or, at least, really good Blu-ray.

I wonder what other MGM catalog titles are on Criterion's radar?

I'm a huge fan of The Great Escape. As many Brits my age will likely recall, it was a Boxing Day television staple for many years. The problem I have now I'm older is that I find the
[Show spoiler]mass execution
at the end so damn depressing that I really have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it. Still, I'd be very happy to see - and would buy - a Criterion edition.

Given directors long obsession with a certain genre,
[Show spoiler]I would think this would be made today as a zombie movie. Maybe with them helping him in some way.
