I was quickly glancing through the new release page on Criterion and saw the blackface cover and thought “what in the world were they thinking?” then I realized what film it was for.

So... why is Cranes are Flying a 2K restoration when it just had a 4K restoration that was in theaters? Am I missing something?

Ironically, the OOP Twilight Time release is loaded by comparison. Well, by comparison. A talking head interview and a trailer really aren't much to brag about.

Show Boat was somewhat of a surprise, but the biggest one is easily Leave Her to Heaven! I no longer have to spend who knows how much for the Twilight Time Blu Ray!

Definitely in for The Cranes Are Flying.

Leave Her to Heaven is a surprise, isn't it? I've never seen it rumored for a Criterion release after the TT edition went OOP.

Excited for Leave her to Heaven! One of the things I missed out on from Twilight Time.

Various labels tried to license Leave Her to Heaven since TT's licence expired but Fox said it was off the table, so Criterion have probably had the licence for years waiting out the restoration, long before the takeover.

Great month but sadly Criterion have given up on special editions.

Wish they would just offer their films to Arrow lol

My personal preference would have been the 50s version. Maybe Warner Archive will release that.

Also interesting to see that Prince of Tides uses the original poster art on its cover.

Showboat, Bamboozled, The Cranes are Flying, and Salesman are definite! Might take a chance on Prince of Tides!

Surprised they're not including the full (or as full as still exists) part-talkie1929 Show Boat that was included on MGM/UA's laserdisc.

I wish that the Show Boat release had included the other two versions like the old MGM Laserdisc set but Criterion’s LD release was just the ‘36 version so I can’t complain too much. I do wonder if the ‘29 version has deteriorated to the point that only parts of it are available or what. My recollection of seeing it on TCM many years ago was that it was in rough shape back then.

It's one of those films I'm very mixed about. Taken by itself, the film really works and showcases Kaufman at the height of his powers working with an impeccable cast. But when put up against the book and seen as an adaptation, the film falls short almost laughably.

It's one of those rare instances I feel strongly about, sure many other films are not exactly the greatest in terms of being an adaptation with Doctor Zhivago and almost all of Kubrick's work coming to mind. But for these, I can sort of see the films existing separately from the book.

For Unbearable Lightness of Being, the film is close enough to almost being a translation of the book to cinematic form, which precisely goes on to show just how much of the depth in the novel just disappears on the screen. Even complicating my view is when I compare it to another adaptation like Age of Innocence, which I don't necessarily see as being the better film, but in some way Scorsese managed to add to the novel while at the same time going for an almost direct translation from page to screen. The same just doesn't seem to be the case of Unbearable Lightness of Being, where despite being an almost direct translation from page to screen, the film just goes on to show just how much got lost from page to screen.

That's what I'm hoping for. As I really enjoy both versions.

As for the Prince of Tides cover, maybe it was Streisand's wish?
