Re: potential controversy over the Bamboozled cover

Sometimes, when demands are being made by people who are upset over something and they want it to be fixed or changed, those demands are worth paying attention and perhaps even acquiescing to. This would be no such case. I haven't even seen Bamboozled, but it's clear to me that the point not only of the cover/poster but of the premise of the film itself is to force the viewer to confront a number of social and historical facts -- ugly facts, sure, but that's part of the point. Spike Lee is also not only black, but has always been unabashedly pro-black and an important cultural voice on racial issues in America. So, yeah, that kinda matters. For Karen to get upset over this would be idiotic, like getting upset over the "KKK" in BlacKkKlansman. But then, I guess, Karen is an idiot.

The Safdie bros. seemed like they keep up with Criterion's releases when they were in the closet, but some of the people they have in the closet seem to be unaware of the invention of blu-ray, which is shocking for people who work in the film industry.

Criterion has always tended to drag their heels when it comes to new formats. The first movie DVDs came out in early 1997. Criterion's first DVDs came out a year later (spine #4: Amarcord and #5: The 400 Blows were released in March 1998), while they continued releasing laserdiscs until March 1999. They were also slow in adopting the anamorphic format for widescreen releases.

The first movies on Blu-ray were released in June 2006. Criterion's first BD releases were over two years later, in December 2008.

The first movies on UHD were released in February 2016. So, we're probably overdue for Criterion to get with the program. But given that it took them 1 year to adapt to DVD, and 2½ to adapt to BD, I suppose we shouldn't expect them to adapt to UHD for at least another year.

I personally think they see streaming as the way forward. The Criterion Channel appears to be a success and, while I'm not saying that they plan to end DVD and Blu-Ray production, I think any 4K releases are going to be on the Criterion Channel and not UHD.

Nope. Amen!

I brought up the game Punch Out the other day and my brother, who constantly brings up these complainer subjects, had to mention that “some people” think the characters are stereotypes. Yeah, “some people” did probably say that, it doesn’t mean they’re complaining about it or anything. No one actually cares about it. What a downer.

Rather, boutique labels do in general, not Criterion in particular. They were I believe the first boutique label to release DVDs, maybe Anchor Bay had some out around the same time, and their first Blu-rays came out during the same year as BFI’s, Eureka’s, and Kino’s.

If people wouldn’t complain about dual format packaging, allowing Criterion to dramatically reduce packaging costs, then they’d probably start doing UHDs sooner than later.

Or Criterion could simply point the complainers in the direction of every other UHD distributor in the market, as they all do dual format packaging and none of the others feel compelled to bow to such complaints.

What would you guys say are the hits and misses in the Ingmar Bergman box set?

I purchased the set when it was first releases, but haven’t even bothered delving into it yet. Instead, I’m thinking of keeping a few of the standalones I already have and picking up a couple other favorites, like The Seventh Seal and Cries and Whispers.

I've watched 22 of the films so far and I say the first miss for me was Hour of the Wolf. While not a bad film and maybe one that gets better with a repeat viewing, but for the moment it was a very confusing film at times throughout. I think the favorite of the ones I watched for the first time was Shame in which it shows one of the best characterizations of the emotional stress than war can cause to one's soul and how individuals will react to such a war.

The difference is that every other distributor doesn't create huge, oversized digipack packaging made out of flimsy cardboard in order to accommodate their dual format releases like Criterion did.

From what I remember only the three disc dual format releases had digipack packaging. The two disc dual format releases in general were still in plastic cases. Also, a number of the three-disc dual format releases came with a substantial booklet which would work best in a digipack packaging.

I will not be doubledipping on UHD except for future new releases of films I don't have on blu-ray. That is unless a great deal of restoration has been done to the films. I prefer the older films anyway and they never were meant to be released in such high definition. Many of the Golden Age film directors preferred a soft focus for many of the scenes (particularly with women) and were never meant to be hd, Plus when I was a child I had to endure bad antennae reception and many stations came in not so good. I'm not that old but I remember the 70's before cable was in houses. Thank God I don't have to deal with that anymore. But I'm thankful for what I have.

Why not do that instead of relying on other people's opinions? Is that not why you bought the box, to have a full glimpse of a director's vision through his filmography?

One of my favorites is also one of the bleakest-Through a Glass Darkly, but Harriet Andersson is also my favorite of his actresses. Dreams is considered lesser Bergman but I find it highly enjoyable with Andersson in her Monika persona but much better dressed and a terrific performance from Eva Dahlbeck. (another favorite)
