I would love to skip over the DVD and go straight to BD from the LaserDisc if Criterion get's the rights again for Hardboiled and The Killer. I think Supercop never left LaserDisc so there is not a Criterion DVD.

I’m pretty sure he knew that, as well as the rest of us. He was making a joke.

You forgot Pasolini, Rossellini, and Antonioni!

Those three are pretty well represented, but I would be happy to have more. I could also use some Visconti. There's a restoration of Vaghe stelle dell'Orsa (Sandra) floating around somewhere, but it's never been released anywhere as far as I know. Also, La terra trema and Ossessione are musts.

What about City of Women? I'm assuming since that one is with Cohen it won't make into CC's Fellini centennial set...Because the Bergman set included several films Criterion had never before released in any capacity. Also The Voice of the Moon, which is with Arrow.

I still don't understand why they won't rerelease the Bergman standalone releases that include older masters than are available in the set (i.e. The Seventh Seal, Cries and Whispers, Fanny and Alexander), unless they just haven't gotten around to it yet.

My guess regarding the Bergman releases is that it just isn't worth it financially for them.

For stuff like 2001: A Space Odyssey or Blade Runner, I'm sure the upgrade to UHD is worth it but perhaps less so for Rules of the Game or L'Atalante, just to list off a few examples. But for any film I don't yet own at all, I honestly don't mind future proofing my collection by purchasing a UHD copy bundled with a 1080p blu-ray. And I'll double dip on something like 2001, especially since the included blu-ray includes the new restoration as well.

But even for films like La Dolce Vita and L'Avventura the current Criterion blu-rays will do just fine. And CC's 1080p presentation of the theatrical version of Tree of Life is already mind blowing. And we're unlikely to see Tree of Life on physical UHD anytime soon thanks to the Disney/Fox connection.

Not to mention Neri Parenti and the likes.

Yeah. I could see them re-releasing The Seventh Seal on UHD if/when they get into that game (as it is the only 4k restoration), but the others, unless they make a quiet running change in-between pressings, those new masters are going to stay boxset exclusives

Since I recently purchased Studio Canals Melville boxset, I decided it was time to sell my blu-ray of Le Cercle Rouge. I didn't want to, really, but now that I have the box set, and since a new restoration is likely sometime soon, and since I was still able at this time to make a decent coin on it, I thought I should do it while I could.

And on Melville, I'd like to see an upgrade of Le Deuxieme Souffle this year. 🖤

My recent purchase was Swing Time. I'd like to get Picnic at Hanging Rock as well. A great mystery film.

I'm very excited about "Teorema". I wish they'd upgrade "Mamma Roma", as well.

I have most all of Pasolini's work from overseas releases. But I'd love more Region A releases.

I'd like to see Antonioni's "Zabriskie Point" come out on BD, too.

I'd love some more Bertolucci, too. "Before the Revolution", "The Spider's Stratgem", "The Sheltering Sky".

And, yes, I hope Fellini is about to get the royal treatment.

Good call on Zabriskie Point! A Region A release of The Passenger is one I want as I never imported

The Criterion DVDs of the Woo films were my first DVD purchases, after they had already gone OOP. The Killer I found in a local (Boston area) music/movies store (the late, not-quite-lamented Strawberries). Hard Boiled I got on eBay not long after for more than MSRP, but not much more.

Criterion lost the rights to Supercop after the LD, in one of the many instances where the studio in question wanted to keep the DVD rights for themselves. As it was, Criterion had to use the dubbed print that Dimension supplied them. There was an alternate Cantonese track, but no English subtitles. I'd love to see this film come out on BD either from Criterion or Eureka. I assume that the rights to it are complicated in that neither of these companies were able to include it with the other two Police Story films.

I saw the film first in a Boston-area art/rep theater (the Coolidge Corner) as part of a run of HK films. I snapped up the laserdisc from Rolling Thunder as soon as it was released.

This is amazingly all on-topic, in that the Rolling Thunder LD label was a Criterion sub-imprint. They released three titles: this, Beat Takeshi's Sonatine, and Jack Hill's Switchblade Sisters.

Is there reason to believe Criterion is even attempting a Fellini set as expansive as the Bergman set?

It could just end up being:

Variety Lights
The White Sheik
I Vitelloni
Nights of Cabiria
La Strada
Juliet of the Spirits
And The Ship Sails On

Is the general consensus that the Wong Kar Wai set will include Fallen Angels and Happy Together? I'm just trying to decide if I should throw my OOP Kino discs up on ebay while they're still worth a dollar or two.

I'd think it would include these and definitely all the films that are already out on blu-ray, with possible new restorations of 8 1/2 and Amarcord.
