It could just end up being:

Variety Lights
The White Sheik
I Vitelloni
Nights of Cabiria
La Strada
Juliet of the Spirits
And The Ship Sails On
some reasons are why other films might be included are...

Il Bidone, Spirits of the Dead/Toby Dammit are on the channel that begin with a Criterion logo. Criterion has a relationship with Warner (Ginger and Fred) and Universal (Casanova) and while a lesser possibility they do work with Cohen (who has City of Women) as they have had some of their films on the channel. I don’t know if Arrow would license Voices/Orchestra... I Clowns doesn’t seem to be in print anymore from Raro so that’s possible too

Given that the Kino releases (both as separate releases, and the bundled release) have been OOP for quite a while, and haven't popped up from anyone else, I would expect them to be included in Criterion's set. I can't be responsible, though, if you sell off your copies, and they don't appear in the set.

My wild-assed guess is that the set will include, at least, As Tears Go By, Days of Being Wild, Ashes of Time Redux (it'd be nice if Criterion had the original version as well), Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, Happy Together, and In the Mood for Love.

I'm less sanguine about it including 2046, My Blueberry Nights, and The Grandmaster, but I'm hoping it will. At least the first.

It'd also be really nice if they could include all of his short films (especially both versions of "The Follow", his entry for the BMW series The Hire).

It'd be great if they could get the original version of The Grandmaster as well. I'd much rather see that version than the one Harvey philistine Weinstein released.

In December 2018, when searching for Wong Kar-Wai on Janusfilms.com, the site briefly returned 2046, Fallen Angels, and Happy Together. So the set should at least include everything before My Blueberry Nights

I do kind of wish a Blueberry Nights bluray would get released just because I think it’s a good looking film over everything else

Is there a reason why you haven't imported it? It's a fine release and region free.

Just as an FYI - all of Fellini’s films (including shorts) are receiving 4K restorations, so there’s potential for a lot of Criterion upgrades as well as new spines. I listed out his entire filmography and cited where the restorations are referenced (mostly all at the BFI): https://popculturepundit.wordpress.c...i-100-tracker/.

Only La dolce vita and Fellini Satyricon are currently available in 4K transfers on their Criterion discs.

Thank you for this!!! Whatever Criterion doesn’t get, I will happily re-buy from whatever company releases them even though I have most of the films available right now anyways

Great news. I hope the “Roma” remaster does away with that older Ritrovada grading.

I can't believe that I'm actually going to admit this in public, but I still have yet to see Picnic at Hanging Rock. In any form. And I have no idea why.

The inclusion of 2046 would make my year.

I am trying to cut my spending on movies way down in 2020, but will gladly splurge on a Fellini box set from Criterion without hesitation!

Using the Bergman set that had far more movies and discs as a reference, can we anticipate the Fellini set being less than $150 from major retailers upon release?

I think it depends on when in the year it gets released. The Bergman set coincided with B&N's 50% off MSRP sale in which titles that came out within the sale were eligible for sales price and Amazon price matched.

But for any film I don't yet own at all, I honestly don't mind future proofing my collection by purchasing a UHD copy bundled with a 1080p blu-ray. And I'll double dip on something like 2001, especially since the included blu-ray includes the new restoration as well.

But even for films like La Dolce Vita and L'Avventura the current Criterion blu-rays will do just fine. And CC's 1080p presentation of the theatrical version of Tree of Life is already mind blowing. And we're unlikely to see Tree of Life on physical UHD anytime soon thanks to the Disney/Fox connection.
You don't know my pain. Having watched 2001 ASO 4K UHD.

... and tonight resorting to 1080p Solaris. 480i DVD Criterion collections. Barry Lyndon on just 1080p.

When I've had a 4K UHD Sony TV and 4K player for 3.5 years...movies like Solaris and Barry Lyndon belong on 4K UHD no matter what anyone says to their detriment of film I hope they are proud of themselves.

I could live with B&W 4K masters on 1080p but not grand color films. Solaris NEEDS it so badly. And Criterion is using a retarding force on what would be, and could be a newer generation of customers to their fanbase.

Well to be fair, Criterion's release of Solaris is from an older master, but their 1080p presentations of Barry Lyndon and the theatrical version of Tree of Life already look pretty damn good. I see where you're coming from though...

I'm curious though. Are some of the early Criterion blu-rays upconverted from lower resolution masters, the ones that are merely advertised as 'high-definition digital tranfers' and are simply direct ports of DVD releases from the early to mid aughts?

Good question.

I myself got tired of waiting on Criterion to release Abel Gance's Napoleon and ordered it (along with some other titles) from BFI. Now I just need to find a 6-hour slot to watch it in.

So, if Criterion announces it in the next few months, you'll know whom to thank.

They are not upconverts but older 1080p masters used for the previously released DVDs.
