It must mean that 2046 and Ashes of Time are still with Sony, so it is possible that Criterion can get them for the box set.

Sure, that's possible. That the retrospective is just limited to the earlier films with new restorations doesn't necessarily mean that the others are out of bounds, but I'm not sure we should count on them being in the BD set. It would be a pleasant surprise if they were, but I'm not holding my breath.

Janus' website did have 2046 on it for a short time. I think it will be included.

On the other hand...

I would be ecstatic if 2046 wasn't included in the Criterion set, if it meant that Sony was planning a UHD release.

(Yeah, 'cause that'll happen...)

I saw someone say it’s 6 films, specifically following up and stating that 2046 is not included, which is disappointing

Really? I felt as though it was basically TwitchTv: the movie. And it is as boring as that sounds (sorry if people here like TwitchTv).

Personally, all of the various award noms are incomprehensible (even the technical ones as while I am sure the one shot visuals were a technical obstacle course, this is far from the best cinematography of the year) but getting one for screenplay is outrageous!

I think the retrospective announcement was counting "The Hand" as the seventh film. It's generally thought of as a short film, but at 44 minutes it qualifies as a feature film. The AMPAS definition for short film is for films 40 minutes or less.

I thought 1917 was interesting thinking about it’s technical merits, but became kind of bored after about 30 minutes because i just wasn’t engaged emotionally or intellectually in terms of story or character.

The screenplay nomination is a complete joke... soldier collects milk. 5 pages later... women caring for baby: this baby needs milk.... ugh

I thought 1917 was excellent. Very immersive, and intense.

KL Insider basically confirmed on the HTF that Criterion got the rights back to 'Peeping Tom', 'Forbidden Games', and 'Le Trou'. Sadly it seems like Lionsgate still has the rights for 'The Third Man'.

I hope the rumors of a Bruce Lee set are true. I miss out on the Shout! Blu-Ray releases and now they are a bit pricey on the after market.

Absolutely mesmerizing film. I think the greatest war film since Saving Private Ryan. The "long continuous shot" effect worked splendidly. Incredible technical achievement.

Technically, he was answering a generalized question, and did not specifically say Criterion would not be releasing films outside of the six that are touring. His original Tweet merely said that the 6 films being toured had 4K transfers supervised by Criterion. In fact, he never said anything about Criterion releasing physical copies. That said, it's obviously not a positive sign for inclusion of other films, but this certainly doesn't slam the door on that.

The thin Red Line was far superior to SPR IMO

And speaking of, WTF happened to A Hidden Life at the Oscar noms?! 🤬

Well, we can hope they only did restoration work and didn't do any colour "corrections".
