In fact, Days of Heaven is actually Malick's most personal film, conveying his thoughts on several different topics from his youth. |

My haul is almost complete:
Red Desert Paths of Glory El Norte Breathless The Thin Red Line The Night of the Hunter (on Tues) Seven Samurai The Double Life of Veronique (dvd----decided to get this over the UK blu-ray for a few reasons. First, you can't argue with $14. Second, the packaging is exquisite. Third, online reviewers have noted that there isn't a significant difference in the technical qualities between dvd and blu. Fourth, it has additional special features that I'm looking forward to). |

Happened to me around the same spot when I got it well over a year ago on netflix. I've never had a problem before or after that with my player, which leads me to believe it's the disc.

Red Shoes
Black Narcissus Black Orpheus House the Magician Breathless Vivre Sa Vie Mystery Train I actually still need to pick up the Seven Samurai and with a 25% off online coupon I'll likely just order it... So far I forgot how awesome Mystery Train is...I love older JJ films and I think this is easily in his top 3. I'm getting quite sick of JLG. I like both Breathless and VSV enough to own but the older I get the more one dimensional and trite I find his work to be...(sorry CG, not meant to slyly take a dig at you). I fought the P&P lovefestfor years but honestly, they were a great team. The Magician is easily on of Bergman's best films. I had this one on my buy list as soon as it was announced. Its a neat little cat and mouse game, sort of a movie within a movie, ala Red Shoes...but, to me, pulled off in a more believable way, unlike Persona. House..what can one really say about it other than its bat shit crazy and wholly awesome. Black Orpheus is the only one I couldn't get through upon first viewing but I will revisit it before casting final judgement. |

Breathless is in my Netflex queue. I watched Pierrot Le Fou and just didn't get it. But, I'm willing to give Godard another chance. You can't lose with Bergman. I truly love his work. My favorite is either Cries and Whispers or Seventh Seal. Both ask very profound questions about life and death. |

I didn't go back and read all of the replies regarding Days of Heaven (some of you guys are at 3 or more paragraphs, and you're using big words too..... makes my head hurt!)
I suggested that the poster get the other 2 or 3 or whatever it was, and exclude Days of Heaven because the other ones (whatever they were.... it was Ohhhh so long ago) were more important in my opinion. I think Days of Heaven is a must own film too..... When I agree with CG, I didn't realize I was signing up for the Malik-Hate-Club ![]() |

I ended up passing on both DAYS OF HEAVEN and THE 400 BLOWS. I picked up VIVRE SA VIE (which I watched last night and loved it. THANK YOU!) and M. The best part of the story is that my friend wanted to buy one and he couldn't decide which one to go with. So I let him use my last 25% coupon and told him to get DAYS OF HEAVEN.

Well, here is my take that I picked up from this sale-
- Black Narcissus - The Seventh Seal - Yojimbo / Sanjuro - The Thin Red Line (due next week) - Seven Samurai (due in 2 to 3 weeks) Watched Yojimbo today, for as this and Sanjuro were the only blind buys from this list, and I loved it. Thanks go to 'BlueYoda' for frequently mentioning how great this movie is or I would have probably passed on it. I really think that I prefer the look of beautifully filmed 'old black and white movies' over modern color films. I cannot explain it, but there is just something more pleasing to my eye about them. ![]() And I also have a question. Can you still play the film's subtitles while the commentary track is on, or will it only play the commentator's subtitles? |
