Likewise. I'll hit my next $50 gift certificate from Criterion, and I've got money burning a hole in my pocket.

I'm going to be heavily investing time (and money) into more contemporary foreign film. I've recently added three Academy Award Best Foreign Film winners and nominees: Director Andrey Zvyagintsev's Leviathan, Russia's official submission from 2015, and two winners, Juan José Campanella's The Secret in Their Eyes, Argentina's submission for 2010, and Asghar Farhadi's A Separation, Iran's winner from 2012.

I am absolutely chomping at the bit to buy Parasite. It comes out on the 28th, and I may just bite the bullet and pay full price for it. I started hearing ridiculous buzz from it when it debuted at Telluride, and I've wanted to see it ever since.

Although I've yet to see it, many of the reviews for Uncut Gems could do that for you.

I've only watched it one time, and, quite honestly, given who was involved in the movie, and the acclaim surrounding it, I felt there was something wrong with me. Philip Seymour Hoffman is a god to me, as is Joaquin Phoenix. Rami Malek, Laura Dern, Amy Adams...I mean, that's like my dream cast. Anyway, I've ordered it, so I can watch it again.

It has been about five years since I've seen it so my recollection is a bit fuzzy but I'll give it a shot. I remember that what made Punch-Drunk Love work for me was the fact that PTA took all of the things that most people find annoying and childish about Sandler and used it against him. It was almost like he knew the audience couldn't afford to see him as funny but kinda scary and isolated. He's actually abused pretty regularly here. Like The Master, Punch-Drunk Love is short on narrative. It's really about two lonely people finding each other and falling in love, Emily Watson is a delight as always. That's about all I can say without spoiling anything.

What's your take on "Inherent Vice"? I'm not saying that they have a lot in common, but within PTA's ouevre, "Vice" is relatively the closest to PDL, and vice versa. According to PTA (if few others), they are both comedies.

Adam Sandler is excellent in it, actually — he channels that weird, nervous energy that doesn’t always have an outlet in his trashy comedies into something equal parts awkward, funny, and heartwarming. He should have won an Oscar for the role, I think. As great as he was in Uncut Gems, this film really gets what makes Sandler work on the rare occasions he does.

LMAO! I just read this post, and totally heard Tony Curtis' Joe in Some Like it Hot in my head. Joe with his sailor hat and ascot, talking to Marilyn about his yacht. That Joe. And I'm laughing hard.

Favorite scene in the whole movie. Sandler holds his own against the great Philip Seymour Hoffman. Good stuff. Love this flick.

I kidded The Great Owl once about that last one saying it sounded like something a mom would accuse her teenage son about while changing the sheets. “Have you been reading that Raymond Hammett trash again!”

Lovely movie it is. I hadn't seen it in about 10 years or so, but I have it on Criterion blu-ray stored in one of my bins. It's unlike any other movie with Adam Sandler in it. Personally speaking, I think the man is a comic genius, and having just seen him in Uncut Gems, I now realize he is a brilliant actor. If you're a fan of PTA, see it, and don't be afraid because of Sandler being in it. I couldn't think of another actor that would have been suitable for the character he played in Punch Drunk Love. Also, if you're a fan of tropical locations (I don't want to spoil it for you), you're gonna be happy you've watched the film.

Which is exactly why I find Netflix annoying. If I want to watch a war film (that I don't already have on BD), I don't want to have to search through umpteen different categories to find one that appeals. And yes, I know that a title will likely be listed in several categories; that doesn't eliminate the annoyance.

The website known as They Shoot Pictures Don't They has just posted their new list (2020) of the 1,000 greatest films of all time. Bill Georgaris, who created the site, has been posting this annually for the past 15 years. Personally, I think that it is the best list, as it takes into account not only great American films, but the films of World Cinema, documentaries, cult films, and experimental films. Many of the films available through the Criterion Collection are on the list!

Thanks for posting, I've been checking TSPDT periodically but wasn't really expecting Bill's 2020 list until later in January. Second the recommendation for this site, I think it's great.

I highly recommend it as well. Been going there for several years now. Discovered quite a few films because of it. I like perusing the Top 250 Directors list too.

The Zvyagintsev, Campanella and Farghadi are tremendous films. Enjoy!

Also PDL is a very good movie but if you didn’t like what PTA was doing with Inherent Vice (a superior film to PDL), you won’t like PDL.
