Just to quibble -

if you buy just the blu-ray from the UK it woulda cost you maybe 16 bucks (cheaper if you got more than one blu-ray, as shipping would be less per title); agree about the packaging (though recall it being a pain in the rear to find one that wasn't banged up); doubtful about the blu vs dvd, the blu looks marvelous, and the lossless audio is very nice; it's just one special feature that was missing as far as I could determine (although I don't usually listen to commentaries, so possibly there was a difference there too).

On the other hand -

now that you've bought the dvd, the Criterion blu should be out just after you finish watching the dvd, so get to it!

You can't lose with Bergman. I truly love his work. My favorite is either Cries and Whispers or Seventh Seal. Both ask very profound questions about life and death.
Down By Law is probably my all around favorite JJ film.

Breathless is considered a hallmark of the French New Wave and on that merit alone its worth owning. Its also infinitely more watchable and enjoyable than PLF.

And for the most part, I agree on Bergman. I have seen most of films and I mostly enjoyed all of them.

I double dipped on this one, the UK blu is dirt cheap. And I'd agree with DVDBeaver this time: "As predicted, the upgrade to an HD image shows some significant improvements over the Criterion, with a sharper image, less noise, and more vibrant colors." That said, I am glad I have the CC for the other reasons you mentioned plus the enormous boost in street cred with Spine-Addicts.

I'm with Marcus Wright, my order says all of mine should be ready to ship on the 16th, that being said I ordered all of mine on Nov 4th (waiting for the pre-orders of Night of the Hunter and Modern Times before anything else can ship). They've canceled M from it though even though it says on the website that it should be ready within 24 hours, yet Paths of Glory hasn't been canceled even though the website says it'll take a couple weeks to ship it?? Really confused...

Because their website is the most obtuse and confusing of all the major etailer sites I buy everything in person. I ordered a few during the last summer's sale and it was a nightmare between confusing status updates, conflicting shipping information, and damaged items. I'm cool with just half off and the occasional coupon because I don't have to wait and I can inspect the item in person while NOT having to deal with terrible site.

So, if this is the final B&N Criterion Collection sale hopefully you guys got what you wanted. Personally, if Borders who ever comes in to buy B&N, not sure if we will ever see this 50% off sale again.

But it's been a good two years and I think many of us were able to capitalize on these four sales.

Who here owns Godard's Breathless? How are the supplemental materials? I'm thinking of making a blind buy.

I do, but haven't checked out the supplementals yet.

For those with the "16th" as the shipping date (as is mine, ordered day 1 of the sale) it's because you're including a title in your order that isn't released until the 16th.....

If you order one title today that is available.... it'd very possibly ship out on Monday....... If you ordered Night Of The Hunter 2 months ago..... it'd ship out on the 16th

That's cool. But just know, if that was me talking about how far past I am of Kurosawa, I would be a bad guy and people would wet their pants trying to quote and say something smart. I don't give a F who likes Godard, which people thinks I bash people who don't. Whatever.

my apologies in advance if this question has been asked to death, but:
are the releases Criterion has put out on blu-ray always and only going to be out by Criterion?

what i mean is there are dvd releases of many Criterion releases, but put out by different studios as well, will that ever happen with blu-ray? will we ever see The Darjeeling Limited, The Thin Red Line, Revanche, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and others re-released at a cheaper pricing / studio? or will it only be the Criterion ones available?

before i knew what the Criterion label meant i was looking on amazon and saw a dvd release of Videodrome for like, $6, but then the one underneath it was $34.99 and i was confused as fudge. and i instantly thought, "well, that more expensive one probably just has a bunch of extras i'll never watch, so i'm not gonna get that one". which now i realize how much work goes into Criterion titles and probably 65%+ of the population doesn't know this.

curious because if people are at the store and see, let's say The Dark Knight for $15 but Antichrist always at $39 people will shy away, which sucks.

so will the BD Criterion titles be released just as barebones editions eventually or will they stay as is?

Already we've had 3 Criterion blu-rays go out of print (The Man Who Fell to Earth, Pierrot le Fou, and The Third Man), at least one of which has shown up as a re-release on Studio Canal.

Unfortunately, by most accounts, the Studio Canal release is the same price as the Criterion, while being slightly worse visually.

Still, it does show that just because a Criterion blu-ray exists, that doesn't mean it won't ever get another release.

I like to think I see everything worthwhile that comes out and, in my opinion, America Lost and Found: The BBS Story Blu-ray Boxset is the most impressive cinephile package of 2010.
