I'm not sure I knew about that one. Pretty awesome that Netflix has a Sion Sono title.

I also feel like Europa and The Element of Crime needs an upgrade from Criterion as well. They need to pick up Dogville, Epidemic, and Dancer in the Dark

RE: Fellini 100

According to IMDb, Fellini has 27 credits as a director.
  1. Variety Lights (1950)
  2. The White Sheik (1952)
  3. I Vitelloni (1953)
  4. Love in the City (1953) - segment: "The Marriage Agency"/standalone Blu-ray available from Raro.
  5. La Strada (1954)
  6. Il Bidone (1955)
  7. Nights of Cabiria (1957)
  8. La Dolce Vita (1960) - standalone Blu-ray available from Criterion
  9. Boccaccio '70 (1962) - segment: "The Temptations of Doctor Antonio"/standalone Blu-ray available from Kino
  10. 8 1/2 (1963) - standalone Blu-ray available from Criterion
  11. Juliet of the Spirits (1965)
  12. Spirits of the Dead (1968) - segment: "Toby Dammit"
  13. Fellini: A Director's Notebook (1969) - episode from "NBC Experiment in Television" and released on standalone 8 1/2 Blu-ray.
  14. Fellini Satyricon (1969) - standalone Blu-ray available from Criterion
  15. The Clowns (1970) - standalone Blu-ray available from Raro
  16. Roma (1972) - standalone Blu-ray available from Criterion
  17. Amarcord (1973) - standalone Blu-ray available from Criterion
  18. Casanova (1976)
  19. Orchestra Rehearsal (1978) - standalone Blu-ray available from Arrow
  20. City of Women (1980) - standalone Blu-ray available from Cohen
  21. And the Ship Sails On (1983)
  22. Che bel paesaggio: Bitter Campari (1984) - commercial
  23. Alta Società: Rigatoni Barilla (1985) - commercial
  24. Ginger and Fred (1986)
  25. Intervista (1987)
  26. The Voice of the Moon (1990) - standalone Blu-ray available from Arrow
  27. The King of Ads (1991) - featuring the two aforementioned commercials

What is the likelihood that the Criterion box set will contain all of these, particularly the films that have been released by other studios? In terms of the films that Criterion has released, how many do you think will be newly remastered? Just 8 1/2?

BAMPFA is showing the three film segments as "A Fellini Omnibus". BAMPFA is also showing Rome, Open City, Paisan, and The Flowers of St. Francis as part of the centennial, as Fellini has writing credits. (I don't see these three films being released in this box set, however.)

I went to the website for Park Circus, and they have two classic movies from the 1950s that are 4K DCPs, so hopefully Criterion might release these 4K restorations on Blu-ray. These are the two films I'm talking about: ROMAN HOLIDAY (1953) and A PLACE IN THE SUN (1951).

A Criterion release of both of these would make my year.

Scottie, Fellini: A Director's Notebook (1969) is on Criterion's 8 1/2 Blu-ray.

Preferably one who knows how to draw. If they want to stick with the New Yorker magazine crowd, I'd suggest Richard McGuire. His work is beautifully spare but very clever conceptually and able to contain multiple interpretations -- all hallmarks of a good clue.

IMO, they should think outside of the box and go with an artist who sculpts. Wouldn’t that make for some interesting clues?

I am dying for releases of these two from literally anyone, particularly the former which is easily my most wanted title on BD. Paramount's refusal to shit or get off the pot is generally inexcusable, but especially so when it comes to these two titles in particular if you ask me. How a film of Roman Holiday's renown and stature has gone this long without a BD release is beyond me.

By the way, not to burst our collective bubble or anything, but Lee Kline (technical director at Criterion) expressed doubt during a podcast last year as to whether either of these titles will be coming from Criterion any time soon. If I recall correctly, he said he "didn't know" whether they're being worked on. I wish I could start holding my breath, but I don't know whether I should.

The guessing game that because Criterion passed on Sixteen Candles its because of some invented controversy is...something. A lot of you are telling on yourselves today.

Interesting, I see this Oliver Twist (1948) is being released in Germany in a few months by Pidax. Not sure what to expect for pq

Would love to see the Lon Chaney, Sr version on restored blu someday too, i’ve only seen a poor dvd of it

Would also be cool to see a non-musical cut of Oliver! They can leave in the ‘boy for sale’ song though as that fits logically to the times

If they're doing a "complete director works" box, they wouldn't fit. But I have this feeling that some kind of "early works of Fellini" box is more likely than a complete one, if only because of the number of companies they would have to license from for a "complete". And if they're doing an "early works" box -- basically, upgrading all of their DVD-only titles + maybe "Il Bidone" -- it could make sense to pad the box a bit with movies he wrote.

The bergman box is probably a good indicator... They didn’t include Torment which was only written by him and was the only film they didn’t include from the early bergman eclipse in the boxset. They have the rights, so they could have if they wanted to

Hi, we go into this on my Cinema Italiano Podcast episode on Fellini 100.

The TL;DR is (and these are all our best guesses, of course):

- all the current Criterion releases seem likely
- the OOP Criterion releases are very possible
- the as-yet-unreleased domestic Blu’s are possible
- the in-print domestic Blu’s (like Voice of the Moon) are stretch, but not impossible - given Lee Kline has said the distributors all know each other and get along

I also wouldn’t be surprised if his contributions to omnibus films get included as supplements, or Il miracolo (which he co wrote and acts in), since some of these are Janus titles.
