Makes my day. Besides After Hours, I think Ghost Dog is my current most wanted title. And it sounds like we might be getting both in the near future.

Criterion has already been killing it in 2020 and if there's truth to even half of the releases they're rumored to be putting out, it's gonna be a hell of a year.

Yeah, Sonatine would be an amazing fit for Criterion. Probably his best work and one of the best Japanese films in the last 40 years.

Having finally seen and loved Great Expectations, I would love it if Criterion (or anyone) could give it a really lovely Blu Ray release.

Just a heads-up for anyone not region-free and looking to upgrade Billy Liar - KL announced a release this coming April:

The region-free ITV release is excellent. I'm sure there may be some room for improvement, but it looks fantastic to me (and it's one of my Top 20 films of all time).

Default My Criterion Top Ten

In the history of this thread I am sure you all have done this before, but I wasn't around then, so...I doing mine now. We have all seen the lists on the Criterion website. Filmmakers, actors, artists...you name it. All of them listing their ten fav Criterions. 1 through 8 were no brainers for me. They were getting in. 9 and 10...I had to make some serious Sophie's choices. So many I wanted to put in those last two slots. That being said, I'm cool with my final decision. If you've never seen Bresson's or The Archer's masterpieces...there is a flash sale imminent in the next few weeks. Just add them to your cart. Trust me. Anyways, if anyone else wants to join in...it's a free world

2 of the finest films in the Criterion canon are his...Ace in the Hole and Paths of Glory.

Would love it if Criterion could nab The Strange Love of Martha Ives and/or The Big Sky.

Yikes. Trying to narrow this down to 10 favorites is proving all but impossible.

Working on it.

I don't think anyone would need my top 10 list with the usual masterpieces like Seven Samurai or The Night of the Hunter. Instead, these are my 12 Criterion Blu-ray recommendations that I feel still underappreciated, which might be more useful for the upcoming flash sale.

Make Way for Tomorrow: Leo McCarey was nominated for Best Director Oscar for this and The Awful Truth in the same year. He won for The Awful Truth and said, "Thanks, but you gave it to me for the wrong picture."

Ride with the Devil: Ang Lee's director's cut is one of the best cinematic depictions of the Civil War, showing it was more than just the dichotomy between the Union vs. the Confederacy or pro- vs. anti-slavery.

Pale Flower: Nihilism in cinema can easily be pretentious for its own sake. And this one is the showiest of them all yet somehow still feels genuine.

People on Sunday: Four ordinary Germans enjoying their Sunday right before the Nazi regime. Written by Billy Wilder and co-directed by Robert Siodmak and Edgar G. Ulmer.

Letter Never Sent: Perhaps this is not as great as The Cranes are Flying or I am Cuba. But It's still full of amazing spectacles characteristic of Mikhail Kalatozov and Sergey Urusevsky.

Pierre Etaix: Highly recommended to fans of silent clowns and Jacques Tati.

Il Sorpasso: A bittersweet buddy road comedy cutting right through the multi-layered Italian society.

The Essential Jacques Demy: While The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort are two most popular Demy and rightfully so, Lola, Bay of Angels, Donkey Skin and Une Chambre en Ville have their merits. I love the subtle connection between Lola and The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Bay of Angels would make an interesting double bill with Uncut Gems. Or how can I forget beautiful Dominique Sanda in Une Chambre en Ville or almost hallucinatory bonkers moments in Donkey Skin?

The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind: I'd put these two right next to the best of Sam Peckinpah.

Speedy: Not Safety Last! Not The Freshman. This and (still not released) Girl Shy are my two favorite Harold Lloyd films.

I Knew Her Well: A feminist, more easily accessible version of L'Eclisse. Probably my #1 pick here.

Only Angels Have Wings: The purest, most existentialistic Howard Hawks adventure film mainly because the enemy here is the forces of nature.

Yeah, I Knew Her Well is a great film, and it really is a very nice package that Criterion presents here.

And as a big fan of Jacques Demy, and especially of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, I can't speak highly enough of that set. It's just wonderful.

Thanks for the other suggestions. I'm definitely going to look into some of those. I haven't seen Pale Flower, or any of Shinoda's other films for that matter. But reading the description of the film, it sounds right up my alley. So I'm definitely looking into that one. Letters Never Sent sounds good too.

Some of my favorite Criterion titles beyond the usual canonical suspects are Two-Lane Blacktop, the two Lino Brocka films, French Cancan, In A Lonely Place, La Cienaga, Love Streams, and I'm sure there are others.

Le Cercle Rouge is ranked a modest 610 on TSPDT, but it's a popular title among Criterion aficionados so doesn't need too much defending, as much as I love it.

Given the precedent set by Army of Shadows, are the other Studio Canal rescues in the pipeline that Criterion has already released on blu-ray likely to be direct ports of the previous releases? Le Cercle Rouge is rumored to be getting a 4K release in Europe later this year, so at this point, would Criterion still bother rereleasing it with the older master? Also, would Pierrot Le Fou have a new master as well? Granted, Criterion's Pierrot blu-ray still looks pretty good by contemporary standards.

Likewise, Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Would the Criterion HD transfer be the same as on the currently available studio canal blu-rays?
