Here are my Oscar picks for tonight's 92nd Academy Awards (with 2nd choices included). I never posted my predictions on this forum before so it will be fun to see who wins tonight. Keep in mind, I've only seen 15 movies from the nominations list (and no shorts, documentaries, or animation films from this year's nominees). I think 1917 is going to have a big night, winning as many as 6 categories, and the big loser will be Joker (with the exception of Joaquin Phoenix winning best actor, edging out Adam Driver). I also think Parasite and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will win a lot of awards tonight too (but Scorsese's The Irishman won't nab an award). My dark horse candidate is Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story, but I don't think it will win a single category. Of the 9 movies for Best Picture, I saw 6 of them (and didn't see Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, and Ford vs. Ferrari). Two films I felt deserved to be included as nominees in tonight's Academy Awards were: A Hidden Life (directed by Terrence Malick) and actor Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems. Both were phenomenal films. My pick for best science fiction film of 2019 was also Claire Denis' High Life (and not Ad Astra).

Yeah, surprised it hasn't happened. The DVD set had some good features that the Arrow Blu-ray does not. I love the Tatsuya Nakadai interview and wish there were more releases that had interviews for him, as he always has something insightful to say. The upgrade to Blu-ray from Criterion is way overdue.

I'm eagerly awaiting an upgrade of The Hit. Criterion Tweeted a couple of pics of Terence Stamp from the film last year, which I hoped was a precursor to a release - but nothing yet.

I just received the Koch Region B release of The Limey from Amazon Germany. Always thought it might get a Criterion release. One of my favourite Stamp performances.

I've not seen many of the nominees, and don't really have an opinion other than I would love to see Tarantino take home one of the big ones.

What does confuse me is how Parasite can be nominated twice in a "Best Film" category.

Interesting. Never knew they tweeted photos from the film. It's one of my favorites, and I've longed for the day to upgrade it. Hopefully it happens in 2020 as it's simply a great film.

I'm glad I didn't see that post because I would have gotten excited initially and disappointed every month when it wasn't announced.

However, Criterion works in mysterious ways and sometimes it takes them a lot longer to release something than expected. I think there is a decent chance of it happening, but the question is when? Man, I love this film.

Barry Lyndon
Hiroshima, Mon Amour (no Resnais)
All That Heaven Allows (Tarnished Angels my only other Sirk)
Red Desert (have the other Criterion Antonioni)

If you're region-free, The UK Studio Canal version of Don't Look Now is better than the Criterion one. It's based on the same 4K restoration with different (and better) color correction & framing, better encoding and some new supplements including an archival audio commentary by Nicolas Roeg that Criterion couldn't get. Oh, and SC also released it on 4K Blu-ray.

Hiroshima mon amour and Barry Lyndon are both in my top ten favorites, so those I would certainly recommend. As for the other one, I’d probably choose All That Heaven Allows or Red Desert. Depends on if you like melodrama or arthouse flicks more.

well whatever the new titles are this month, THIS YEAR better be when Criterion goes to 4k. Shout Factory just fired across the bow with "The Deer Hunter" announcement, even Vinegar Syndrome put out a 4k title. Whats the hold up Criterion, I consider them to be the gold standard in films on disc, they should be leading it and not following up behind.

All That Heaven Allows and Barry Lyndon...visual feasts for the eyes and the very definitions of what constitute "cinema".

Foreign films are eligible to be included in the best picture category, right? It sure worked tonight as Parasite won not just International movie of the year, but Best Picture as well and rightly so... its a phenomenal film.

My heart went out to Joaquin Phoenix though and his brave speech for global justice and love. His tribute to his brother River Phoenix, to be respectful to animal life, and his plea to stop cancelling/hating fellow human beings was enormously beautiful. For those in the Woke culture to dismiss him as a privileged, white male celebrity is completely missing the point. To wallow in anger, hate, revenge, and wrath is to embrace misery. I was inspired by his words and overall enjoyed watching the show.

I ended up winning in 17 of the 24 categories. Not too shabby especially being that I used my gut feelings half the time on choosing winners.

The International Film category has its own separate set of rules for qualification from all other categories. There was even a film in the early 70s called The Emigrants which was nominated for Best Foreign Film one year and then a year later was nominated for Best Picture.

With Parasite going big this year at the Oscars, and with Criterion nabbing some Netflix titles, I hope they go back to that well and get Okja. It’s not Bong’s best movie but it’s one that deserves to be on blu and out of the reigns of Netflix.

Also speaking of Netflix and Criterion, is The Irishman officially the most expensive title Criterion will have? (Production budget wise)

Wish Criterion would release Radio On (1979). It needs a blu ray release and is the kind of film that is ripe for rediscovery. Ctriterion worthy imho
