Don't panic. If I have to get an Amazon or Roku stick or Apple TV, fine. I just don't know what you guys would recommend. Help a man out. What's the best of those options?

Thank you very much in advance for your advice and opinions.

Best regards,

I'd go with Roku. Mine works pretty well, and unlike the Apple TV 4k which stutters when I try to watch CC on it, haven't had any significant issues with it. Others have had the stutter issue as well, so it's not just me. Roku is cheaper too.

Perhaps. Yet, the budget for Armageddon was $140mil in 1998. According to the CPI Inflation Calculator, $1 in 1998 is equivalent to $1.57 in 2019, which makes Armageddon a $219.8mil movie (The Irishman is $159mil).

Whats the need for 4k UHD when we already have 4k transfers? The films look as great as they're ever going to be already

[Show spoiler]It sure worked tonight as Parasite won not just International movie of the year, but Best Picture as well and rightly so... its a phenomenal film.

My heart went out to Joaquin Phoenix though and his brave speech for global justice and love. His tribute to his brother River Phoenix, to be respectful to animal life, and his plea to stop cancelling/hating fellow human beings was enormously beautiful. For those in the Woke culture to dismiss him as a privileged, white male celebrity is completely missing the point. To wallow in anger, hate, revenge, and wrath is to embrace misery. I was inspired by his words and overall enjoyed watching the show.

I ended up winning in 17 of the 24 categories. Not too shabby especially being that I used my gut feelings half the time on choosing winners.
Well, that's the thing. I always assumed that "Best Picture" was Hollywood rewarding itself. The "Best International Feature Film" category replaced the "Best Foreign Language Film" this year. If a South-Korean made film qualifies for both, why couldn't an American-made film qualify under "International" given that the "Foreign Language" component has been dropped?

Sounds like semantics, and perhaps it is a bit. But it seems like maybe a move designed to placate criticism of a lack of diversity in the "Best Picture" category. Sorry if that sounds cynical; it's just an observation.

Anyway, I've not seen the film but it is on my list. The reviews and plaudits seem to be universally positive, so one has to assume it was a deserved winner last night.

The Oscars is still an American-based awards show, so anything outside of this country is International. It makes sense to change it from Foreign Language since an international title could still be in English.

The foreign language component has not been dropped. Only the title of the category has been updated. From the Academy's rules & eligibility document:

Quote:
A. DEFINITION
An international film is defined as a feature-length motion picture (defined as over 40 minutes) produced
outside the United States of America with a predominantly non-English dialogue track. Animated and
documentary feature films are permitted.

But foreign-language films have been nominated for Best Picture since the 1930s. The first one was Renoir's Grand Illusion. It's not common, but it's nothing new, either.

Oh, it still has to be predominantly non-English? What if the movie is based in India, or Hong Kong and is in English? It wouldn't qualify?

Good to know. Always happy to learn.

But there was no Foreign Film category then, right?

No. Nigeria's submission was disqualified for this year's Oscar for that very reason.

In the year of Grand Illusion, no.

But since the creation of the Foreign Language category, non-English films like The Emigrants, Cries & Whispers, Il Postino, Life Is Beautiful, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Amour, and Roma were all nominated for Best Picture.

Damn, that seems unfair to me. You'd think the change of the name of the category would allow for that obvious gap to be fixed.

I believe there was an issue a year or two back with a film was judged ineligible because the language the film used (not English) was not the official language of the submitting country. Pretty sure this is why they changed the name and slightly modified the eligibility rules.

I like Brian De Palma quite a bit and I am a big fan of both films for different reasons, but "Sisters" and "Carlito's Way" are two opposite ends of his creative spectrum and I would not recommend going in to "Sisters" which any expectations relating to "Carlito's Way".

If you are interested in De Palma and you already like Antonioni, I would recommend checking out "Blow Out" over "Sisters". (It's still pretty far removed from "Carlito's Way", though.)

If I were a betting man I'd wager that the sale will be on Feb. 25th which is the date their Karel Zeman box set is coming out.

Guys,

Maybe it's been asked a couple of times, but I'm confused because of the re-release of Army of Shadows. What are the chances of Leon Morin, Pretre / Bob le Flambeur / Le Doulos / Touchez pas au Grisbi getting a criterion blu ray release. If not likely I'll go with the KL but the completist in me wants a CC release

There'd be no sense for Criterion to release Region-A releases on the heels of Kino.

The best we can hope for are some upgrades to Les Enfants Terribles and Le Deuxieme Souffle...and hopefully the introduction of Magnet of Doom to HD video.

Which happens to also be a title in the collection:
