Jaques Tati's The Big Day (Jour de Fete). It was my introduction to Tati, not knowing a thing about him, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Tati has such great comedic timing.

If you’re looking for something low brow, I’d suggest Honkytonk Freeway. It’s a film by John Schlesinger and it’s a typical early 80s comedy in the vein of Used Cars, Cannonball Run, Thank God It’s Friday, etc., with several wacky characters with their own plot threads and the obligatory gratuitous car crashes. It was a huge flop but it has a stellar cast and I actually thought it was kind of fun. They’re pulling it from the rotation at the end of the month so if you’re interested, catch it before it’s gone.

I would probably pick Some Like it Hot. It’s not only very funny but I discover something new about it every time I watch it.

I have that on Blu-Ray.

I actually went with Police Academy 2. Not a Criterion, but I was in the mood for some laughs.

Thanks for all the recommendations everyone. I placed those on my watch list.

So why did you pick police academy then? Isn't that like picking Debbie does dallas for a family movie?

Or, more to the point, picking it for a non-family movie.

Been on a Dassin kick & rented Brute Force last night and absolutely loved it.

Anyone know of any plans for an upgrade to Blu?

Bummer that the DVD's suggested Retail Price is $40, seems like DVDs are usually $30...

I know the Police Academy movies are not works of art. But I'm a child of the 80's and I always found them funny. Sometimes I just want something to make me laugh.

Anyone who starred in Hiroshima mon amour, Léon Morin, Priest, and Amour, as well as all the others ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMMANUELLE RIVA!

She sadly passed away in 2017, aged 89. But what a brilliant career she had. And heck, Hiroshima mon amour is honestly one of my favorite films ever. If she had been in that, and that alone, she'd be beloved.

Her career began with an uncredited role in 1958 and ended -- well, her last credit as it stands, anyway -- in 2016. The Icelandic film, Alma, by director Kristín Jóhannesdóttir is in post as we speak. So, at least one more credit is due.

I've never been a huge fan of the Police Academy movies. But I am hardly one to criticize anyone when it comes to choices in comedy.

A less-than-one-minute look through my collection would make that absolutely clear to anyone. Heh. I don't even try and pretend at this point.

The Police Academy films are a guilty pleasure for me. I know they're not Academy Award material. Tremors and Roadhouse are similar. They are not great movies, but they make me laugh and/or keep me interested.

That's exactly how I am with stuff like Bad Moms. I laugh so hard, and I don't care what anyone thinks about it. If it makes me feel good, makes me feel better than I did before I watched it, then it did its job.

They starte off well but got worse with every release IIRC - especially as Kim Catrall was only in the original

I thought 3 was weak. I loved 4 because it was the first one I ever saw and I saw it in the theater. I agree that the movie generally sucks. But for a 16 year old kid, who loved skateboards, it was a great movie.

I have not seen any past 4, but I'm going to check them out because they're all on Netflix.

I like 4 because of the presence of Corinne Bohrer, who I always had a crush on. (It's also the first credit for David Spade) The first four were good, dumb, fun comedies. I think I will throw one on now.

As tempting as Police Academy 2 always is, I went with RCRochester's advice (I'm not the OP, BTW) and watched Honky Tonk Freeway.

HOLY CRAP! How have I never heard of this before???

The cast is loaded! Everyone you can think of shows up here: Beau Bridges and Beverly D'Angelo, Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy, Howard Hesseman and Teri Garr, Daniel Stern pre-Home Alone and Peter Billingsley before A Christmas Story, and William Devane as the mayor who is also the minister and who knows what else.

If you're like me and this is one of the few '80s movies you've never seen (and/or heard of), do yourself a favor and track it down (or watch it on The Criterion Channel).

Thanks, RC!

Very happy with the Roma release. Nice thick booklet. Best I can compare it to is Ugetsu.

Gonna watch it now for the first time
