I was considering blind-buying Fail Safe. Is that a wise choice? I liked Dr. Strangelove, so I'm thinking this would be a companion piece to that film.

I was all set to order at 12, and then got distracted by some work stuff, then I realized I was one title away from the $50, so I had to add another title, then more work stuff, then I got as far as the final click to Place the Order and the site crashed, so I'm pretty sure it's a grand conspiracy personally directed at me, and I'm only sorry that you've all gotten caught in the middle.

I'm focusing on Japanese cinema right now, as well. Kuroneko, if you've not seen it, is incredible. I'll grab it during one of the next sales. That's one I'll watch repeatedly. At some point, Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman will be mine, as well. Whenever it's back in stock.

The first thing I'm watching when my order comes in is Shogun Assassin, which is an extra on the Lone Wolf and Cub set.

Fail Safe is the serious approach to the same subject matter of Dr. Strangelove.

Buy it. Both are great.

Fail Safe is a superlative film, imho. One of Sidney Lumet's best.

Within the Collection, Dr. Strangelove would be a good choice to pair with it, or The Manchurian Candidate. But I'm planning on watching it and Warner Archive's Seven Days in May, back to back.

Another outstanding film that I'd like to see in the collection (it's out of print domestically), though a modern selection, is Thirteen Days (2003); it's a look at the Cuban Missile Crisis from the vantage point of the Kennedy White House. It's one of the strongest films of Kevin Costner's career. If you've never seen it, it's been playing on HBO recently. It's a must see if you have access to it.

The political climate and inherent tension in all these films are frighteningly relevant today.

Definitely a great double feature. I find Fail Safe to be truly terrifying - mostly due to the prosaic way in which almost unimaginable choices and consequences are depicted, and the unnerving lack of a musical score.
