The Criterion Channel has Pierrot le fou and Alphaville both streaming. I wanted to add another of Anna Karina's collaborations with Godard, but I couldn't decide between Band of Outsiders and Le petit soldat.

How long will these remain available to stream? I might just have to sub tonight.

Placed an order in January from Amazon when Holiday and Temple Drake were on sale and I had some downtime, so today presents the opportunity to pick up a few titles that have been long on my wish list, along with Roma and two from new favorite directors Chang-dong and Petzold:

Last flash sale, I think I completely ignored blu-rays and just ordered the bulk of the Eclipse sets that I wanted.

I got my two most wanted boxsets finally: Cassavetes and Rossellini/Bergman. I for some reason was a bit anxious because I thought the Cassavetes set would go insanely quick.

Within the Collection, Dr. Strangelove would be a good choice to pair with it, or The Manchurian Candidate. But I'm planning on watching it and Warner Archive's Seven Days in May, back to back.

Another outstanding film that I'd like to see in the collection (it's out of print domestically), though a modern selection, is Thirteen Days (2003); it's a look at the Cuban Missile Crisis from the vantage point of the Kennedy White House. It's one of the strongest films of Kevin Costner's career. If you've never seen it, it's been playing on HBO recently. It's a must see if you have access to it.

The political climate and inherent tension in all these films are frighteningly relevant today.

Definitely a great double feature. I find Fail Safe to be truly terrifying - mostly due to the prosaic way in which almost unimaginable choices and consequences are depicted, and the unnerving lack of a musical score.

I remember watching Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb many years ago (I own the Criterion blu-ray) and recall comparisons made to Fail Safe, which came out the same year (via the supplements), and how both films are extremely relevant today (and more than ever). I want to revisit Kubrick's film and after doing so, will watch Sidney Lumet's version of the cold war/nuclear paranoia.

There is a local indie movie theater here that focuses on weekly themes for films. I would suggest to them to focus on "nuclear paranoia" films including the 2 mentioned above as well as others such as 1964's Seven Days in May, Thirteen Days, and even films like WarGames and Threads (both early 80's films when nuclear paranoia made a comeback again in the USA).

If I were going to focus on a dissertation or thesis for a PHD or Masters, I might write about this whole topic in cinema.
