I've owned hundreds of criterions over the years.
And even though I've always loved "Close-Up", I was a bit on the fence about shelling out the cash for The Koker Trilogy.
Just finished watching the whole box in 3 days.
By far, one of my favorite Criterion releases ever. Possibly Top 5.

Nah, they already shipped it. However they did reply to my query in a fairly quick manner and advised me to have the package "returned to sender". They will give me a full refund upon receipt. Pretty good customer service. I went and ordered the blu-ray through Criterion using my $10 gift cert. All good in the end. Live and learn!

I've done that on Amazon before. I bought Black Narcissus, thinking I got the DVD, but I bought the Blu Ray by accident. I didn't have a player at the time, so I had to return it.

The $10 discount code email just arrived.

Nice gesture by Criterion during these challenging times. Thanks!

Default Expiring from The Criterion Channel!

There are surely much better movies I could have watched than Desperately Seeking Susan (and I'm surprised this is even on the service at all), but I was tired and wanted to turn my brain off. Plus, as one of the few '80s movies I've never seen, I thought it was about time.

Well, even though the movie is generally fun, Rosanna Arquette is super cute, and Madonna displays screen presence (in what was a much smaller and more limited role than I was expecting), there's probably a reason it took me this long to see it...

It's good, don't get me wrong, but I've already halfway forgotten it. With that said, it is beautifully shot - with amazing location work, use of colors, etc.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: Fun enough, but not something to desperately seek out.

The Burt Lancaster playlist expires at the end of the month and I've been catching up on a few that I had never seen before. I was sorely disappointed by I Walk Alone which was his first pairing with Kirk Douglas, I found it really quite tedious and dull, but if you (or anyone else) hasn't seen Sorry, Wrong Number yet, that is a great movie, one of the best noirs I've ever seen.

I think the Paul Schrader films are expiring too and I watched Light Sleeper, that is a must-see for anyone who is a fan of American Gigolo, Taxi Driver or Bringing Out The Dead. It's a spiritual cousin to those with the same sort of grimy, after-dark atmosphere and many plot similarities to Gigolo in particular.

I also watched both of these earlier this month, but with flipped opinions.

I thought I Walk Alone was a kickass noir with great dialogue and a perfect fresh-out-of-prison protagonist, while Sorry, Wrong Number had a convoluted plot full of lame flashback scenes. Though the ending was fantastic.

I watched I Walk Alone a few months ago when I thought it was expiring (I'll post my quick review at the end). I liked it more than RCRochester did, but not nearly as much as Hoke Mosely.

I am definitely going to watch Sorry, Wrong Number before the end of the month because I stan Stanwyck. (Did I use that ridiculous word correctly? I couldn't resist the pun!) I'll post my thoughts when I do.

Here is my mini-review of I Walk Alone from this thread a few months back:

Truth be told, the real highlight here is neither Lancaster nor Douglas but rather the alluring Lizabeth Scott caught between both men.

DaBargainHunta's Decree: I watched the final Lancaster-Douglas film a few years ago - the quintessentially '80s Tough Guys - and now I've seen the first, made four decades earlier. I assume the films in-between are their career highlights. Still, this is a fine and fun introduction to the prolific pairing.

Update: According to THIS, it's sticking around in January. While I appreciate last-minute extensions, I wish the Channel would reflect them accurately.

Its not like anyone ever mistakes Marie for a cool kid. I would guess that Marie would be referred to as “that weird chick Floriane hangs with occasionally”. So many things to think about / discuss with this film.

Not sure how many have seen this film since I don't remember anyone ever talking about it but thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated lol

PS - Adèle Haenel is amazing even as a teenager.
It would be nice to maybe see Criterion release this on disc, because I'd need to use a VPN just to watch this. The UK DVD is OOP and the rip that circulates through the usual channels is pixelated and low resolution.

Happy 70th anniversary to Roberto Rossellini’s The Flowers of St. Francis!

From last year, here’s an audio essay on this 1950 film, discussing its portrayal of the saint and his ideologies, plus the cultural context in which his story unfolds.

I am really hoping I get the $10 code. *fingers crossed*

I haven’t been able to take advantage of any of the Criterion sales in quite awhile.
