I can't seem to get in to A Canterbury Tale. I've put aside for now but I don't know why I can't lose myself in it. It's also my first of the duo.

No need to contact. They don't advertise very well. Just add 3 titles to your cart and the discount automatically applies by subtracting the lowest priced item of the 3.

With the Criterion's Channel additional code, I might buy some films now. What's your opinion on Showboat? I love musicals and I've never heard of that one until recently.

Crazy thing is I actually did a term paper in college on German POW camps and my primary point of reference/research was "The Great Escape". I, uh, didn't do so well on that paper. Silly, naive me (slap myself on the forehead). I should have done more research. I learned the lesson the hard way.

I made a similar mistake a year later when writing a paper on pimps, my main point of research was "Doctor Detroit". Fool me once, shame on you, can't get fooled again....

It's terrific. Both the movie itself and Criterion's Blu-ray.

I absolutely hated that movie.
But for some reason I stuck with it.

Then, after grinding my teeth through nearly the whole thing, it suddenly all came together in the last ten minutes or so.

It was many years ago that I'd watched it. In fact, till I read your post, I'd forgotten just how much I did not enjoy the film for the most part as it was unspooling. It was only because I found the end so edifying that ever since I've filed that movie away in my head as a "great" movie and another one of P&P's best.

There have been a few films like that, where I've stuck with them more because everyone else was saying they were worth it, and it was only in the closing moments, or sometimes even in retrospect or a second viewing, where the film finally gelled for me.

Not saying that it'll work for you, just that I'd completely forgotten how I had actually processed that film well over a fifteen years ago, when I first saw it.

Not to the same degree, perhaps, as you and A Canterbury Tale, but I found that to be true with a lot of films I watched for the first time on Netflix. It'd be "yeah, this is OK, I guess, but I can't honestly say I like it much" for most of the runtime, and then the last 20 minutes would pull it all together like The Dude's living room rug, and I'd end up give it an enthusiastic thumbs-up.
