Marketa Lazarova is a masterpiece. I fell in love with it after importing the Second Run DVD, and then again after seeing the Czech Blu, which unveiled all the wonderful depth and detail missing from the DVD.

There is a definite need for more Vlacil on Blu. I would love to see Criterion (or anyone, anywhere, for that matter) release Valley of the Bees, The White Dove, Adelheid, etc.

Am I correct in assuming that titles must first go OOP for a while before being announced as an upgrade? Or can the DVD remain on sale with only a new Blu-ray announced? I don’t know if I should bother to hope for a Trouble In Paradise Blu-ray every month or if I should just wait for the DVD to go OOP as a sign.

I suppose In the Realm of the Senses is thematically in the same ballpark, but richer with the subtext of class hierarchy and political scenario. I'm really not sure about the re-watch value of BB (bought the Second Sight UK blu years ago but only watched the DC once, which I thought was stretched out. I am idly curious to check out the truncated edition.)

I actually haven’t seen—it’s in my queue and I’ve heard people mention in online. Did you see it/what did you think?

To your first question, a Criterion DVD does not have to go OOP before a BD upgrade is announced.

As to your second question, I believe Criterion would issue a new DVD edition along with the BD upgrade, and I assume the "old" DVD would be available up to that point.

I don't know the film but the Beaver review of the DVD rates the PQ as okay (although the Eureka R2 looks a bit better), and the extras highly - which might be a compelling reason to buy now and enjoy.

Thanks for answering! I actually own the DVD already, but it’s one of my top favorites so I’m always hoping for a Blu-Ray upgrade.

Ah, okay.

Have you sent an email to Criterion? They've always been good in replying to my comments and suggestions, even if there's been no concrete information.

I remember when Eureka did this they said they wanted to do a blu but when they committed to 1080 they could see no difference between the dvd & the blu.

I imagine, if any company can restore it to health, it will be Criterion.

How often do you guys get criterion blu-rays from Criterion / Amazon / B&N that don't have the blue criterion sticker on it? I just got a bunch of criterions from Amazon - luckily only 2 didn't have the sticker. They didn't look re-wrapped though (with cheap plastic), and the booklets and discs look untouched.

Some discs have them, some don't. The absence of a blue sticker doesn't necessarily mean there is an issue. Same with the different types of shrink-wrap. I posted a reply on this a couple of months back if it is of interest:

I wonder if Criterion would ever be risky enough to release Violated Angels? Last time I check, no one ever tries to release it in the US.

Just love Trouble in Paradise. One of several Lubitsch movies really in need of a Blu Ray upgrade

Seems like every order I place directly with criterion I need to submit requests for replacements. Just got another order where the slip cover art were scrunched /damaged on both movies because of how they were inserted into the case by the manufacturer.

Starting to feel unlucky... Is it just me? I feel bad like criterion is going to see I order replacements for for everything but damn I spend a lot of money on criterions I just want it to be Not damaged

I’ve never had an issue with them, except for back in 2016 when my copy of Rosemary’s Baby came in a cracked case. Every other time, my orders have been in excellent condition. Much better shipping than Amazon.

No, it's not just you. I have the same problem quite often. I'm pretty unlucky with it. They told me they are put together by hand at Criterion so I assume that plays into it. They may be doing one after another quickly and not paying close attention.

I've had more than a few ripped or scrunched booklets and another issue is they often slide in the artwork either too high or low causing a crease or rip at the top or a rip at the bottom near the spine. The good thing is they always replace everything quickly and without issue, but I feel like I'm always filling out those replacement request forms.

I wish. Not for me... it doesn’t seem to be how they are packaged I’m just getting ones like where the artwork is not set in place correctly so the corners are scrunched/torn on the top or bottom cover

I’ve never had this issue ordering from Screen Archives, Warner Archives, Shout, or Kino

I just looked it up, and there is a Criterion release for Sabotage... on Laserdisc.

Methinks it's time they released an upgrade.

Nope, I have had to reach out to them before about replacement sleeves/cases. They have always sent new ones without an issue. In fact everyone I have contacted (Arrow, Indicator, Eureka) about this problem have always sent replacements. Eureka even sent replacements and they weren't even damaged from shipping. I was in a car accident the day they arrived from overseas. All three cases/sleeves suffered major damage. Discs were fine, but they still sent replacements. Top notch customer service right there.
