The best Japanese film of every year – from 1925 to now (BFI article)

[Show spoiler]A few thoughts...

- Everybody needs to see Yasujiro Ozu's Late Spring (1949) and Tokyo Story (1953).

- I once saw a 35mm print of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954) at a local theater. It's still one of the best films ever made.

- Harakiri (1962) is so good. It may be my favorite film on the list.

- They did not include Pale Flower (1964) on this list? For shame. It's a brilliant Japanese film noir.

- Branded to Kill (1967) is perfect. Think of what would happen if Quentin Tarantino had made a Japanese movie during the late 1960s.

- I recently bought Funeral Parade of Roses (1969) on Blu-ray, and am looking forward to immersing myself in that film.

- I love the Female Prisoner Scorpion film series. These are so sleazy, but wonderful as well.

- Battles Without Honour and Humanity... Sort of the Japanese equivalent of The Godfather movies.

- Akira (1988). Of course.

- Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) is twisted and amazing.

- Ring (1998). Of course.

- Audition (1999). Of course! When that bag moves... *shudders*

- I saw Nobody Knows (2004) at a local theater. This is a heartbreaking movie, but it's well worth seeing.
BFI lists are alway a worth a read. Some great highlights on your list, Owl. And one or two I know I'd never make it through...

Also, I'll mention some love for Ozu's silent work. I love 1932's I Was Born, But…. The list is a reminder that I need to finally get Rashomon during the October flash sale as that is one of my favorite Kurosawas. I need to get the Female Prisoner Scorpion films. Looking forward to the upcoming 4K version of Akira, but I really need to see some more 80s Japanese film. And oh yeah to finish this off, Seven Samurai remains my favorite film which I generally watch twice a year.

That's what I'm going to guess myself. The Bergman set came out in November. Last year's Godzilla set was in October. It would be nice to be able to pick up the boxsets all checked off in a sale(Fellini and WKW). I will be sitting out the July sale most likely and splurging on the October flash sale and November B&N sale, though hopefully saving enough for some of the noir sales that go on in November.

Man, I thought I was rather well-versed in Japanese cinema, but there's a ton of movies on that list I haven't even heard of. I gotta do some catching up.

I might just start with The Eternal Breasts. It sounds like the biggest must-see.

Isn't it possible Janus postpones WKW till next year so that it has a theatrical run at the very least? I'd of guessed it'd of been slated for Nov/Dec release beforehand in order to give theatrical enough room.

Just looked through some of those titles in post #196366. (Haven't checked the link, though.) I've seen most of them. Speaking of Harakiri, why does Criterion's version have pillar boxes while the Masters of CInema version does not? I never knew this until a few minutes ago. There's more space in the UK version.

Will probably import.

Interesting list. I don't agree with a lot of it, but a lot of them they nailed too. I don't understand the love for Death By Hanging. That was one of the few movies I honestly hated. I feel like I checked the time 50 times throughout that film just waiting for it to be over.
