Overall, nothing in this month of new announcements is screaming for my wallet. The Paul Schrader film does look interesting so I might watch it first (and if I like it, I might go for that).

They are equally great and in different ways to my eyes. If you want to play the numbers game. Cards had one Blu from Criterion compared to Kurosawa’s numerous. While not enough Kurosawa still more than Varda. Another factor is Varda was alive till ‘19. She could’ve had a hand in the set. I know her daughter had a hand. Also a big set and the first woman director from Criterion to get a career set.

Criterion sitting on the rights for movies that should have releases is not new and won’t change suddenly with a Kurosawa set.

Kino also has pages for Testament of Dr. Mabuse, The Threepenny Opera, Westfront 1918, and Kameradschaft, but all those are still on Janus' site (and their respective discs are still in print.) All those and Pandora's Box are still available on the Criterion Channel.

Mark me down with everyone else that was disappointed by this months slate. I'm okay with it though as the last 2 months have been amazing.

Nothing I’m buying day one out of today’s announcements (I’m sure some of them are good, I just haven’t seen them yet) but in my case that works out perfectly because I’m extremely psyched up for the Varda box and this will help me justify that expense!

The Comfort of Strangers is the only certain add for me. I’ll have to do some digging on the others.

I don't think Zulawski or any of his Polish films really fit in the Criterion Collection's line of interest. Arrow would be a better gamble but if you've followed Mondo Vision's releases, they've been the ones consistently putting out Zulawski films for quite some time. That said, I heard that there are rights complications that may prevent a release for the long awaited Polish trilogy.

Well said.
Varda deserves some attention and something like this helps. And to me sets implore me to get them over individual releases of things. I enjoy collecting and it’s great when more things can get housed in one package.

As for these recent announcements, it seems like I’ll save the dough just for that box set.
I’m still waiting for some random surprises that I wasn’t expecting but so happy to be announced.

The Lost Honor Of Katherina Blum sounds very intriguing. I'll purchase that, Toni, and The Comfort of Strangers during a sale.

I'd buy some of those Agnes Varda films if they decide to sell them separately.

Maybe next month we'll get an announcement for The Irishman.

Totally on the above post saying its nice getting the full director package in one go. Meanwhile can't believe its been a decade and the Chaplin's haven't finished yet. Or a few years since the Wenders tour and still missing a few titles. I like when Criterion gets directors I like/am interested in, but the super staggered approach can be a little tiring.

If these special collected sets sell well for Criterion, I can picture more coming out. So a Godard or Chaplin of Lloyd set could get released. The possibilities are endless

I love when they do films that connect either because of director and their themes/styles and/or because they're connected by story. The Monte Hellman duo western set is fantastic and I adore my Before trilogy set.
I've been moaning on for a Ang Lee 'Father Knows Best' trilogy set (along with his other unreleased films like Lust, Caution).

The best Japanese film of every year – from 1925 to now (BFI article)

A few thoughts...

- Everybody needs to see Yasujiro Ozu's Late Spring (1949) and Tokyo Story (1953).

- I once saw a 35mm print of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (1954) at a local theater. It's still one of the best films ever made.

- Harakiri (1962) is so good. It may be my favorite film on the list.

- They did not include Pale Flower (1964) on this list? For shame. It's a brilliant Japanese film noir.

- Branded to Kill (1967) is perfect. Think of what would happen if Quentin Tarantino had made a Japanese movie during the late 1960s.

- I recently bought Funeral Parade of Roses (1969) on Blu-ray, and am looking forward to immersing myself in that film.

- I love the Female Prisoner Scorpion film series. These are so sleazy, but wonderful as well.

- Battles Without Honour and Humanity... Sort of the Japanese equivalent of The Godfather movies.

- Akira (1988). Of course.

- Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) is twisted and amazing.

- Ring (1998). Of course.

- Audition (1999). Of course! When that bag moves... *shudders*

- I saw Nobody Knows (2004) at a local theater. This is a heartbreaking movie, but it's well worth seeing.
Thanks for that link Owl. A great list indeed (many of which I've never heard of)!
Branded to Kill will definitely be on my next Criterion must buy list!

Rewatching Dekalog further, I really think it should have been on twice as many discs. Putting five high definition hours on one disc is just dumb. The image could look so much nicer. I should have imported the cheaper Arrow version four years ago instead, but I didn't pay attention to this stuff then.

The Arrow is also 1080i 25 fps instead of the U.S. standard 1080p 24 fps.
