Wow you guys are literally reading my mind today. I was thinking about separating my Criterion releases from all of the rest. Of course it will be a very small section. I'm still nurturing my budding desires

Both of those reviews are ten years old and viewing habits/expectations can/have changed in the past ten years. For comparison, the site reviews of "The Longest Day" and the original "Patton" disc are highly praised but both discs look like shite.

I separate my Criterion releases from my standard releases and other boutique releases.

I know exactly what you mean,

193 Criterion titles so far in alphabetical order and also all my Twilight Time titles.

I love the three films that make up the Noriko trilogy, but maybe that’s because I LOVE Setsuko Hara.

Oh, I absolutely agree. She is simply stunning. Such a screen presence. I was going to check whether she was viewed in Japan back then similar to how other sex symbols such as Rita Hayworth were viewed here, but I forgot. You'll remember the reference they made in Late Spring about Noriko's love interest looking like Gary Cooper. It just made me wonder if she had the same notoriety. I still have to see Early Summer sometime soon for sure. I have it in my list on Criterion Channel.

I thought most people did who had more than 20.
Over the years my shelves have evolved more into Label though my Criterions alwayy have been separate (holdover from Laser days)

Disney's were separate though earlier it was more of Disney adn other Family Films
Twilight Time by 2013 developed a bookcase (now full) instead of just a shelf

Kino were separate and Redemption had their own shelf
Shout (Scream mainly) gathered a spot
Warner Archives
Arrow

Television mostly stayed together mostly Alphabetically though they've now developed subgroups -- Doctor Who, DC Animated, British/Acorn

I actually don't have enough Eureka or Indicator or they almost certainly would.

UHD are separate, but 3D generally stay next to their normal group

support your assertion.
I have to agree with FragnitoM here. I thought the Contempt Blu-ray to be quite poor, which is quite a shame because I adore this film. Yes, there are stretches of it that look fine, and then there are shots that look like DVD quality. The variance in picture quality throughout is astonishing to me. The sound quality is also quite poor. Harsh and echoey, it sounds like it was recorded in a basement or a shower stall. How much of this has to do with the source quality I don't know, but I think this film is begging for a new restoration and a fresh scan for disc.

I was quite puzzled by this site's and DVD Beaver's review and was almost wondering if they watched a different disc than I did. While I don't pay much mind to High-Def Digest, I felt their review is much more in line with my opinion with respect to video and audio (I disagree with them on the film rating, as the film itself is a flat out masterpiece).

Too much effort for me.
If I kept my Criterion titles separate I'd store them in alphabetical order, with the possible exception of sets that are irregular sizes. But, yeah, I like to keep things simple, which is why to date I have kept everything alphabetical by titles.

I satisfy myself (in that way; not in the way that comes readily to mind) by randomly deciding to re-arrange my shelves.

I have, and always have (like hariseldon, from the laserdisc days) kept Criterion separate. Same with most boutique labels. Non-boutique labels are all intershelved alphabetically, except for Disney (WDA and Pixar), and series.

My shelves are also two-deep, with DVDs in the back. They used to be all intershelved alphabetically. Now they are mostly arranged by studio to make it easier to remove if I upgrade a title to blu-ray). If I upgrade from a Warner DVD to a Warner Archive BD, for instance, it's easier to grab the DVD from the "Warner" section than try and figure out which shelf has the "M" titles in the back.

Based on the discussion and seeing how today is a holiday, it finally nudged me into action to organize my collection a bit. I had been thinking about it for a few days, anyway, at this point. I only have 7 Criterion labels so far (soon to be 10) so I sucked up my pride and separated categories into Criterion, Ghibli, 4Ks, TV series, standard Blu-rays and Steelbooks. It looked really nice. But then fate took over. Yup that dreaded fate that makes you want to curl up in a ball and start the day all over. There was just one case left. It was working out so well. Then I tried to squeeze that thick Hobbit case in there and then pop my 12 year old rack gave up the ghost, all the rods flew apart and 100 cases spilled on the floor. Fortunately it was my small rack. So, I decided to get some new stackable smaller racks. This is what I found. They have magnetic doors and handles which makes it very convenient for moving, etc. And...the most important part...things don't go pop and 100 cases fall at your feet. They look really nice. I bought the rack that broke when I first joined the site back in 2008. It was time. Take that fate!

You don't keep the DVD once you upgrade to the Blu-Ray? I always keep the DVD just in case I need it. For example, there are times that I don't have a Blu-Ray player available, such as when I'm at camp.

Probably been asked before but I couldn't find any info. Has there ever been talk of an individual release of The Last Picture Show?

No, I don't keep a DVD if I've upgraded to BD. I also don't keep a BD if I've upgraded to UHD. At this point, I have three blu-ray players: an LG UHD player (in the living room), an LG region-free BD player (also in the living room), and a 10-year-old Sony that was my first BD player (not currently hooked up, but I'll probably set up in our home office once we actually get around to setting up the room fully). If I had a camp, or was renting a cabin for a week or whatever, I'd probably just bring the Sony with me to use. Or I'd not bother with movies at all, and just bring books to read.

There are exceptions where I'll hang onto a DVD after upgrading. It'd mostly be for the following reasons:

(1) The DVD has, say, two different cuts of the movie while the BD might have only one.

(2) The DVD has a significant amount of extras than the BD. And even then, it depends whether those extras are interesting enough to want to keep the DVD around.

(3) If the DVD is from a different region, and my usual go-to places for trade-ins won't accept them. I have a good handful of R2 and R4 DVDs simply because I can't trade them in to Bull Moose or whomever.

If I kept all of the DVDs that I've upgraded, I'd need a lot more shelves than I have space for.
