I have the 2017 Cult Films Blu-ray of Umberto D. I don't like the subtitle font, shadow and size. Would Criterion's match up if I changed the start time slightly and would it be considered okay for someone to upload them?

Watching it now. Even has a typo. I don't remember the last time I watched anything with a typo.

Edit: Done. Had at least five typos. Don't really get how this happens. You have one job.

Most likely. I'm 78% sure that the it will sync but it's going to take some time. Normally it's always Criterion logo first and then Janus Films logo second and sometimes there's a restoration detail they have for certain films. Although, I don't think this film has it. But I'm sure you will most likely get it to sync well. Good luck

I wonder if there hasn't been (enough?) subtitltes/closedcaptioned uproars on social media yet because while I rarely use them (just when I can't understand a line, occasionally), I do find that often the color and font are atrocious and unfitting for the program.
I am surprised that there is not an option to change those on a bluray. Watch this space?

On a similar thought, I don't understand why foreign language releases typically don't have their subs reviewed, especially here. Not even a picture of the subs. Just a review for the video and audio when it's obvious most English-speaking users will be reading subs. I'd also like to know with every release if the subs are in the picture or on the letterbox.

The option isn't there because the subs are images instead of text, which I guess is easier for the player.

Cult Films’ subtitles are really bad. I had their edition of Two Women and the subtitles were so sloppy and riddled with typos that they distracted from the film. I got rid of that disc because I knew I’d never use it again. Hopefully Arrow or Criterion releases the film here eventually.

I would love to see Spellbound and Written on the Wind! I have held off from buying any versions of them! (so far holding out has paid off for Magnificent Obsession and Heaven Can Wait (1943)!)

Yeah, I have come close to buying this region 2 disc but I keep holding out for a Criterion upgrade...

It's a decent presentation. I last watched it at Christmas, back-to-back with the ITV release of Great Expectations. The latter definitely looks better, and is the superior adaptation (and one of my Top 10 films) - but I'd gladly recommend both to the impatient.

The only thing that bugs me is when WAC had their subs in All Caps which is the worst for some releases which it seems they have finally got away from that terrible practice at least. I typically can hear the mass majority of films fine, but I usually still always watch with subtitles on since I can always miss a line or sometimes the audio has problems and you can have difficulties hearing or for when it's my first time watching a film it's helpful to be able to know everything that is happening. I mean yeah there are the releases like the 007 films, Star Wars films, and TV shows where I've seen them a million times like the classic Scooby Doo's, M*A*S*H, Star Trek: TOS) where I won't turn them on since the sound is good or either I've watched them so much I remembered the dialogue by heart. However, I will go out of my way to get the release with subtitles. For example, most of the Olive films lack subtitles so I will almost always get the Region B release if it has subs and generally they do a better job with the finished product than Olive.

I would buy it if it got a Blu upgrade. Part of it is the nostalgia for watching it at the drive-in theater which is also probably the last time I watched it. And well, the soundtrack and Aerosmith probably didn't hurt a youngster like me from enjoying it as Aerosmith was one of the bands we grew up listening to regularly on the radio or the CD player.

Yeah, I don't know how I left out The Burmese Harp on my list of titles that I like to see an upgrade of. It's my fault for missing out on it before the Eureka Blu went OOP, though if I have one complaint about Eureka is they don't tend to give you a heads up if a title is going OOP. I mean yeah, you don't need a heads up about Fox titles, but non-Fox titles are a different story. If I knew it were going OOP I would've grabbed it, now I'll just wait for the Criterion upgrade which could be another 5 years or give up and grab the DVD and then watch it be upgraded and then buy the BluRay.
